I have recently come upon a reasonably priced home in this town...it would definately be a second home for us initially until we are able to make a more official move. I looked at the site and the area looks nice. The house is on a small lot in the town I believe. I need to get the exact address.

I guess I would like to know general information about what life would be like for someone in Fayetteville. What is the school like? What extracurricular activities are offered? I have children into scouting..particularly my sons who are working toward acheiving Eagle scout rank. What is the weather like.....are winters mild ? What is the growing season for gardens? Are there any Congregational Churches in the area? How close are the shopping areas? Are there parks/playgrounds in the town? Are there hiking trails? Ummm.....I am just curious about like in Fayetteville from a personal perspective.

I've been to the area although I don't live in Fayetteville. Spring is pleasant in WV,summer can be humid. Winters vary--some are cold, some not so bad. On route 79 there is a large super wal-mart store. I think there is also a Kmart across the highway and a small shopping plaza. There are several denominations--don't know about Congregational churches. It's a small town, not too far from Beckley,WV. I believe it was once a big coal producing region (as was /is a lot of WV). It's not too far from Hawk's Nest State Park either, which is lovely in the Spring and Summer months.

Fayetteville is a quaint, scenic mixture of WV natives and the WV equivalent to the surfer dude: the rafter dude. Though they don't always see eye to eye, they generally coexist peacefully. The rafter dude factor has brought a different characteristic to this county seat that would be absent without them: the amenities that are desireable to people with higher than above average education, people with a higher than average awareness of environmental issues. So in Fayetteville you can find little bookstores, perhaps art galleries, and "organic" and healthful cuisine at the Sedona Grill, Cathedral Cafe, and Pies and Pints. I assume that the Sewell and Fire Creek seams of coal underneath the town have been exhausted, and I don't expect a resurgence of coal mining in the immediate vicinity of Fayetteville. Some basic chain stores like Wal-Mart and Lowe's are located along US 19 (Corridor "L", the main North-South Route for people to go from Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and Buffalo to North and South Carolina), which is the four lane road that runs through the town. A little more shopping variety is about 20 minutes down 19 in Beckley.

Thanks for the information. It has all been very insightful. I am now waiting to hear back from the owner of the house in regards to where exactly it is located. My husbands cousin lives in the Beckley area and has offered to check out property we are interested in.

I have a place in hico and go to fayetteville all the time. It is a hick town, jumping in the summer with river rafters and dead in the winter except for people travelling 19. The cops in fayetteville make their living off of giving tickets to any poor sap that exceeds the 50 mph speed limit. There is a walmart and a lowes south of town and further south a krogers and minimall. The nearest movie places are summerville and beckley about 20-25 miles away. The winters can be rough. I think i heard someone say the sewer bills were high. You will be able to get dsl and cable modem in town. Downtown has the courthouse, some lawyers, a ben franklin, a couple of resturants, library, post office,2 banks and a half baked civic center(basketball court). There is a nice park in town and you are right next to the gorge. lots of hiking and biking. the nearest hospital is oak hill about 6 miles away but if you need a real doctor you will probably have to get the heath net helicopter to take you to charleston(in an emergency). If you go to charleston down 60 DON"T SPEED IN GAULY BRIDGE. The place is building up. some body wants to build houses around the gorge and mess it up, although i think the building has slowed down. The people are cordial but not the chatterbox types. I keep quiet around them as they are the "we have to get to know you types" another thing is the trash along the roads outside of town although all of West Virginia is like that. find the address and i'll scope it out next time i'm in town.
