The historic C&O Depot in Marlinton, in existence since the Greenbrier Subdivision was constructed in the early 1900s, was destroyed by fire (broken link) last Friday.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, in recent years the structure has housed the Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau. It was one of the last remaining examples of the traditional yellow and white stations of the C&O.

I lived in Marlinton from 1951-56. My father was a State Trooper there. We were friends with the Holland family whose father, Fred ran the depot. My brothers and I played with his two boys and daughter (she and I started first grade together). Several times I rode a self motorized one or two car train that ran between Marlinton and Durbin, I believe it made the trip twice a day, but at least once. Mr Holland used to give his son old forms and tickets no longer in use and we played train. Once the younger Fred got hold of a couple hundred valid tickets and we sold maybe a hundred of them as tickets to our football game, consisting of about 10 grade school kids. Many residents began showing up at the depot to use the tickets. Oops! Rev Ted Higby, Jessup, MD
