Hey y'all. This thread may seem silly to some, and this will probably never happen, but oh well, anyway here's my question.
What territory or territories from neighboring states would you like to see become part of West Virginia? Also, what area of WV (if necessary) would you like to see get "chopped off" and join a neighboring state? In my opinion, I would love to see Southwestern Virginia become a part of West Virginia. I don't understand why this territory never went to WV, but it should have. It's only 75 miles from the West Va border at Bluefield to the northern border of North Carolina. Also, there's a small town in McDowell County named Bishop which is on the state line that's only 79 miles to Bristol, Tennessee. West Virginia should right now be bordering 7 states but Virginia "robbed" us of that territory. Thanks for reading everyone. |

I think WV would be a lot better off just going back with Virginia. The politicians over the year here must have did everything the complete opposite from Virginia and maybe that's why Virginia has thrived and WV hasn't.

I definitely agree with ya on that one. Virginia's one of the wealthiest states in the country and West Virginia's one of the poorest.

Some dumb politician about 15 yrs ago made the remark of selling Morgan/Berkeley & Jefferson Counties either to VA or MD the hightest bidder or some such nonsence...dont remember who it was!!!

While i love WV's distinguished outline, i wouldn't mind adding some counties in the SW portion of Virginia like mentioned before. Another area i would like to see added would be the Winchester, VA area.

That would be great. We really should sign a petition. And we should get rid of the Northern Panhandle and give it to Ohio. Seriously!

Virginia has thrived recently primarily because of its proximity to WDC. Reuniting with Virginia wouldn't do anything to move Logan, Bluefield, or Weirton any closer to the gov't trough.

It's not surprising that the areas nearest DC have prospered (VA and MD,eastern PA as opposed to western PA). I honestly think the counties of Greene,Fayette,PA,etc near the WV border are poorer from what I've seen than many counties in WV (excluding counties such as McDowell, and some of the southernmost counties in WV) .

As a resident of Northern VA you guys are correct, Virginia is prosperous almost entirely because part of the state is located in close proximity to Washington DC. At last count eleven of the top 25 wealthiest counties in the nation are in the DC area, Northern VA in particular holds six of those counties, including the top two in the nation: Fairfax and Loudoun Counties. As I've said before, it is great to have a rich uncle, and in Northern VA's case, his name is Uncle Sam.
Although there are pockets of wealth throughout the rest of VA, namely suburban Richmond and a few other locales, the rest of the state is indeed similar to WV (they would never admit that). I agree with the others when I say that SW Virginia should indeed by annexed into WV, there truly is NO difference between the two. However don't take too much, WV doesn't need the likes of Lynchburg and it's klan like following of Jerry Fallwell and other evangelical nuts... I also think WV should just give Wheeling and the Northern Panhandle to PA. That particular area has a lot more in common with Pittsburgh (or should I say "Picksburgh") than WV. I always got a kick in college how certain people I knew from Wheeling or Weirton would say they lived in "suburban Pittsburgh," that would make my friends who actually lived in the burgh FURIOUS. I however am not so sure they aren't part of Western PA. They share the steel/heavy industrial traits, obession with Pittsburgh sports and also that godawful Pittsburghese accent. I also agree with apalachiangirl that the western PA border counties are just as depressed as southern WV, the only difference is one was dependent on steel, the other on coal. It is quite sad to see once thriving areas in such great decay with little or no hope for an economic future... |
