Maryland taxes are known for being higher than in Northern VA and im assuming the Eastern Panhandle as well. From what I read, the main reasons people move from MD are housing costs and taxes.

Hagerstown is OK, has A LOT more retail than in Martinsburg (for now at least) with a large outlet mall and huge big box retail centers along I-81. However, I wouldn't really choose it over it over anywhere in the Eastern Panhandle.... Frederick I would, especially given your increased budget.

Depending on where you are working in the Panhandle the drive from Hagerstown will be similar to that of Frederick, especially if in the Charles Town area. Martinsburg obviously will be closer to Hagerstown but still I can't imagine Frederick being more than 45 mins away.

Frederick would be much better in my opinion because it is around 45 miles to both DC and Baltimore (vs.70 miles from Hagerstown) making it perfect for fun little jaunts in the city. You can leave Frederick, drive 20 minutes to Shady Grove Metro-rail station (free parking on weekends) and for a small price you can ride the train into DC and not have to deal with the insane traffic on I-270 or RIDICULOUS parking costs in the city. Frederick is also FAR more diverse than Hagerstown.

Would Winchester meet the criteria of what the original poster is looking for? Having spent a little time in all the bigger towns along I-81 between the Mason-Dixon Line and I-66 (Hagerstown, Martinsburg, Winchester) but having never lived in any of those places, I always thought Winchester was a very nice town, nicer than Hagerstown (which still is nice in much of the city), and considerably nicer than Martinsburg (which is still decent but not at the level of Winchester). I'm not sure if Winchester would have the desired diversity though (something also true with Hagerstown and Martinsburg, based on what I've seen). Frederick would be better in that regard but it is considerably further from most of the Eastern Panhandle than Winchester.

My family is moving to Petersburg WV We are about to put our home up for sale. It was built in 2001 in the Inwood WV area. Inwood in located in south Berkely county about 10 miles from Martinsburg. It is a very nice three bedroom home 2.5 bathrooms. We have finished the basement and use half for a master bedroom and the other half as a office. It has a two car gerage and a two tier deck with a hot tub. The house sets on a quarter of an acre in a nice sub division. If interested, email us.... WE will take 233,000 and we will pay 3000 towards closing cost. We have yet to put it on the markrt with a realitor so it is a little cheaper than it will be once we do...
