GHO: I'm eating my breakfast and thinking about these boondoggles is making me sick.

The payoffs came to the politicals last year at the legislatures conclave...later.

I'm 50/50 on these things. Once erected they will be one of the biggest tax contributers in Randolph and Barbour Counties. Which it is always a great thing to expand your tax base. I'm also in favor of them because they are clean and emit 0% CO2. The only problem i'm worried about is the historical aspect of the area where they are wanting to build them. I'm also a bit worried about the company owning them. If they'll do proper up-keep and maintain them and once their lifetime is over, safely remove them, etc.

Some politicians that are against it, are saying it will destroy the skyline of Elkins. That you will look out to the hills and see them and destroy the historical tourism industry they are building in the area. I think tourists would rather see wind turbines than a big power plant polluting the air personally. They would probably view them as the more progressive alternative.

But in WV, coal is king. It always will be, and politicians will always be getting kickbacks from Massey Energy, Consol, ICG, etc.

I would think the people of Elkins would find this an improvement over looking at the huge rock quarry.

GHO: Kickbacks are part of our political legacy...I lived in Oregon. They felt they had only the one state and protected it at every cost. Built the greatest, most beautiful place in the west...
Now its a haven for the California welfare riffraf and the hari krishna's...Its draining the life out of them...

You would think, Did you know the owner's wife of that rock quarry is on some environmental board with D&E? I just found that hilarious. They tore off the side of a mountain that you can see for 10-15 miles away. You can see it starting on Kelly Mountain on 33 east towards Harman just as clear as can be. Yet they are environmentally conscious.

When they are finished perhaps they will put one of those windmills up there...like a dead body holding a twirling flower....

A few years back a group of local homeowners fought a rock quarry expansion down near Snowshoe. They used the Elkins Quarry as the "poster child" of what they didn't want at Snowshoe.

Hmm. Rip the top off mountains to get at a little coal or put a turbine on top and watch them spin...

The balance of nature and our desires for energy seem to have no happy equilibrium.

I have no objection to having them as part of the reclaimation work going on with mountain top removal. All that is left down there is a windswept flat area of nothing.
The water has been destroyed...Its not like the ground can be really used for anything but runoff. Put them there and give the power away...It might be an encentive for development of some kind...something with people...
Remember, Seneca Caverns is gone too...will be mined out from the backside...is that a Wv metaphor of what?

Seneca Caverns is not gone Kennedy, they are no longer open during the winter months. Get the family and go visit now or in May sometime. They originally closed but decided to stay open during the warmer months and close in the winter months because they wern't receiving enough people in the colder months.
