This whole "Open for Business" slogan was thrown at West Virginians without warning. We were all content thinking the state motto would be "Wild and Wonderful" forever. There are a great many who are still unaware that the motto changed. The whole tourism idea is foreign to us. You'll just have to excuse us for not being with the program. This is not Orlando nor do we care for it to ever go that direction.

Isn't that what makes a great camping-in-the-wilderness so special - that you are there by yourself and it all seems so unspoiled and untouched by the wheels of progress?

Who are you talking to? I do not believe that to be a true statement and you just said "you meet less..." I do not. Sounds like you are making a whole lot of generalizations based on one trip, one experience and one point of view. Please do not lump all people into your one-time exposure.

We really don't care if you don't come back. But if you do, please be a well versed camper and bring with you all the things you will need or want for your camping trip. It's the prudent thing to do and what I thought all campers knew.
Apparently not where you come from.

"I didn't come to this part or our beautiful country to find southern hospitality in its gentile wrappings"
Maybe part of the problem is that the poster doesn't know the difference between "gentile" and "genteel" along with other "confusions" in the post.

I'm going to venture a guess here...that this backpacker was in Thomas at one of the mainstreet boutiques...and they all look alike and have the same junque..and the owners are imports from the northeast and have the same persona and attitude...as so..
She didn't make contact with many boafide Wv'ians and made a social judgement in error...faulty data>>>
As so...gentile would certainly be the case and fit properly...mazel tov

Well welcome. I'm in Tucker County right now at our cabin in Canaan Valley. Have you been to the area before? It is gorgeous, laid back, and a lot of fun outdoor things to do.
I don't think you will find many people on here who would fault you for wanting to move here. Sounds like it is right up your alley, especially since you already realize there are not a lot of high paying jobs in the area. The only other thing I would warn you about is the snow and long winters, but since you are from Michigan it may not be a big deal to you.
Be sure to let us know what you think.

Talk about confused - I heard on the news the other day that people can submit suggestions for a new slogan -- I swear the reporter said -- for WV. Surely not.
I heard it on Channel 5 or 12. Anyone know what they were talking about?

Cranberry is the ultimate wild wonderful wv. The river itself is the greatest! Everyone needs to visit.

Pocahontas is pretty rugged too. That whole area is spectacular.

First, i grew up in Randolph county (borders Tucker County) and left soon after HS in 1979. Loved this area but a disproportionate percentage of the people...
Fast forward 30 years; recently left a mid-sized city to move back here for an early retirement, which i had 2 years to optimistically convince myself this will be a fantastic move as the wife promised it to be. I did/will receive concessions to accepting her decision!
As long as i stay on my property or venture to what the wife & me refer to as civilization (Bridgeport) for any products i can't buy online, I'm fine. If I'm running about locally, your first quoted sentence above is true.
I'll admit as you did, this a great area of the state to visit for a myriad of activities, but after 4 days just get the FO... For me, I'm going to be a perpetual tourist!

Where did you move back to? According to my parents things have changed drastically in Randolph County since the 1970's. Less Dukes of Hazzard, more contemporary America slightly removed and at a slower pace. So the people might not be so bad anymore??? ha ha
