My husband and I will be moving soon to Wheeling, West Virginia with 2 small children.

We are moving from Texas, so we do not have any experience with the area, and we want to live in a good neighborhood and for our children to go to a good public school. What neighborhoods and elementary schools would you recommend? Thanks!

I do not live in Wheeling and have only visited multiple times from work. My honest perspective is that you need to visit the city first to get a feel.

Based on Niche, it appears nearly all of the schools are well reviewed

I would avoid living near downtown and the Island. Bethlehem area looks very nice from my travels. It isn't technically in Wheeling, just nearby.

I would recommend Woodsdale, Elm Grove, and Dimmeydale. Those areas are located on Route 40 and close to the interstate and close to local shopping. Downtown is roughly a 10 minute drive from Elm Grove, and a 5-8 minute drive from Woodsdale. Elm Grove would put you closer to the Highlands which is the "strip" mall featuring a lot of chain restaurants and your typical stores. Woodsdale is more expensive in terms of purchasing. I've found rent to be affordable in both Elm Grove and Woodsdale. I haven't seen many rentals in the Dimmeydale area. Living in Woodsdale your children would go to Woodsdale Elementary. If you lived in Dimmeydale they would go to Steenrod Elementary. If you lived in Elm Grove it would be Elm Grove Elementary. All are good schools with Woodsdale and Steenrod probably being the better options.

I would also NOT recommend the Island, Downtown, East Wheeling, South Wheeling, or parts of North Wheeling. Your best bet would be to stick to the "suburbs". Wheeling used to have a large population which has drastically declined throughout the years, so some of the areas have fallen into to dilapidation and disrepair. It is however trying to make a come back with an involved Mayor and City Council.

There is a great parks system here. Oglebay Park is phenomenal https://oglebay.com/.

Wheeling Park is also amazing https://oglebay.com/wheeling-park/http://
The WesBanco Arena in downtown hosts all kinds of events such as the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL hockey), the new indoor Football Team West Virginia RoughRiders, recently the Harlem Globetrotters were in town. The WesBanco Arena is an unbelievable asset to the City of Wheeling WesBanco Arena | Wheeling, West Virginia | The Upper Ohio Valley's Premier Multipurpose Facility

Nothing wrong with downtown Wheeling. Like beautiful architecture? Invest in the community and buy a home there. I have relatives going back 100+ years. I've seen the ups and downs. The Island is another story. Nice architecture there but you see what a failure casinos are. Why are you moving to the area? Natural gas I'm guessing.

Best of luck, Emily. If you are around Saturday, February 10 at 7:00 pm you absolutely need to see the monthly variety show at the 115 year old Victoria Theater. The nicest people in the world run it. Funny, hokey, etc. Trust me you'll love it. VICTORIA

I also love downtown Wheeling but I do not know enough about it to recommend a family move there over other options. If I was single, I would most certainly pick downtown.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that would stay off the island.
