weekend cabin rental wanted in nice town, not touristy, near river/stream
For the record, I am capable of doing google searches but i just dont know what places just look good on the website. I am coming from eastern MD with a 4 yr old so want some where semi-close (4-5hrs) where we can do outdoorsy stuff, fish maybe. I LOVE the mountains and streams and would love a place with both. Please help! too many choices. could you suggest a town or an actual cabin rental if you know of any good ones (secluded but near a nice town).

Goldizen Cabins at Petersburg, Wv are excellent..mostly new log cabins in a cluster. River and city park is located near the cabins...short drive to Smokehole...Smokehole Caverns and Seneca Rocks and many trails to hike...one of the very best and not that far away.
Some of the best river scenery in Wv.
Harrisonburg, Va...and in the back way on Route 33......

^ Second that idea. Smokehole is a great place.
You can also rent cabins at Black Water Falls SP, but they may already be booked solid. Check out the West Virginia State Parks site. Here is the link to Blackwater Falls cabins and accomodations. Blackwater Falls State Park - West Virginia State Parks
I've never stayed in the cabin (our family tent camps) but I hear they are pretty nice. My kids love the nature center located near the lake. They usually have some really fun activities for the younger kids including nature walks, making 'plaster' animal tracks, crafts... We try to go there once a year.

I'm another fan of the state parks. You might want to see some of the pictures in the Wild, Wonderful WV thread that's currently active.
In addition to Blackwater, you might want to check out Canaan Valley (abt 10 miles from Blackwater), Cacapon (near Berkeley Springs, WV) and Watoga in Pocahontas County, near Marlinton. Pipestem (Princeton area) is very nice, but probably beyond your 4-5 hr driving time.
A possible problem is that, in the summer, they prefer to rent their cabins for a solid week (Monday to Monday). But the only way to know for sure is to visit their web sites ( The Official West Virginia State Parks and Forests web site.) or give them a call (1-800-CALLWVA).

Another interesting adventure (we're going on October 4) is to rent a caboose
for a night or two. It's a bit pricey, but a 4 year old would love it !! It's right
along the Greenbrier River. They take you out and unhitch you at a picnic spot
where you spend the night(s) all by yourself. Then they come back and get
you on your scheduled departure day. We actually rented two of them for this
one evening: one for the in-laws, and one for me, the wife, and our 3-year old.

I've heard about that caboose..but coming back to Petersburg and Goldizens...Its a perfect place to see it all and set up a base camp...up the back way into Spruce and over the mountain to Caanan, Blackwater and Thomas/Davis...
If you are spending only one week of your life in Wv...make it this area...
If you are coming regularly..look at Cacapon...the state park cabins are a real deal..and the staff are always like family...see the web sites..

You might look around the Snowshoe area also. Ski rental cabins are discounted during the off season, and you have all of the amenities of the resort during the summer months. Plus you have Cass Scenic Railroad, incredible fishing, hiking, mountain biking the Greenbrier River Trail. Check it out. I know of one rental company that specializes in off-mountain cabins. Mountain Valley Properties at 304.572.2210. I am not affiliated with this company in any way, so this is not an advertisement. But if you decide to come this way, let me know. I'll tell you where the best "swimmin' holes" are located.
