Sales tax has little to do with the lack of retail in WV. It's the cost/benefit that a merchant has to deal with on the taxes they pay on personal property and income, which is much lower in neighboring states. Why operate in Martinsburg when you can you do it much cheaper 15 minutes away.

Also the fact that our legal system is such that any national chain operating in WV can be hammered with an imported frivolous lawsuit claim. In other words, if someone slips on a grape in a Wal-Mart in Maryland, the plaintiff can request a trial in WV because Wal-Mart operates in WV. Better awards, more favorable jurors, legal climate slanted anti-corporate.

I attended a Wheeling Chamber of Commerce meeting yesterday with a marvelous guest speaker- a prof of economics at WVU that went over why this state can't attract businesses. Pretty.damn.sobering.

I have now opened this new thread. Just search for "Berkeley County Growth and Development: Express Your Opinions". I am pretty sure comments will start streaming in soon since this is, again, an ongoing discussion. Now, let's journey back to this threads original topic, shall we? Thanks! -mmccul

My husband works for Geek Squad w/Best Buy, so he has been hearing some of the details about the new store. Once this one opens, it will be his home store instead of the H-town one. Can't wait, since it's only three minutes away from our house!
