supposedly, WalMart is leaving Martinsburg mall in a year or so, they are suppose to be relocating it to Inwood.

But what about Bon-Ton and the other anchors? I could see it becoming like the 1st generation malls in the Anne Arundel county area (you know what I mean, Janipoo) or even Frederick Towne Center. Only anchors, few or no stores in the mall itself... It is part of the mall lifecycle I think.
I remember when the Severna Park Mall, Harundale Mall and Jumpers Hole Mall were all booming shopping centers. Then Park Plaza was built in Severna Park, and Marley Station was built between Jumpers and Harundale.
Soon, all that was left of Severna Park Mall was Giant Food and Caldor (then Caldor closed). Eventually, what was left of the mall was converted into several box stores... Kohls, Office Depot.
Jumpers closed with only one anchor remaining open: Kmart (Kaybee Toys closed). Then Burlington moved in (now Gardiner's Furniture) and Kaybee was turned into a grocery store. Between the two, a Babies R Us moved in.
Harundale Mall, which was lauded as the oldest enclosed mall on the east coast also faded away. Soon, the only thing open was the one anchor: Value City. The rest of the mall was torn down (all that is left is the stone marker) Now, it is a grocery store, AJ Wright and Post office with a few strip mall stores (an Italian restaurant, a nail place, etc.) Now that Value City closed, Burlington moved into the vacated space.
Even Marley Station Mall, whose opening was marked by Oprah broadcasting her show from the Center Court is in decline due to the opening of Arundel Mills. Soon, it will probably look like the Severna Park mall in its languishing days.... dozens of walled up storefronts with happy murals painted on them in an an attempt to hide the emptiness.
I see this happening now at Martinsburg Mall (though not nearly as bad... yet).

Marley is having its trouble, since Hechts went out, Macy's moved in their spot and Bosco went in and is now out. I always heard that the mall charges too much for rent. It is full of Jewelry and phone stores. I heard Burlington pulled out of Arundel and I believe it took over were Value City was.
If you think about it Martinsburg and Hagerstown Mall has the same stores.

I have a friend who owns the land behind the mall. I am refering to the two pieces of empty land surrounding the road that leads out to Mall Drive (behind Bon-Ton). He told me that about a year ago the mall tried to buy that land from him, but he refused. I wonder what they were planning to use that land for, maybe outparcel space? -mmccul

If you dont mind me asking, what does your friend plan on doing with this land? I've always wondered why that has never been developed. It is a perfect place for a nice restaurant: Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc.

I don't think he really knows yet. I asked him about a month or two ago if he would ever consider selling it for commercial or resturant space, and he said he was unsure of what he wanted to do with it. I agree it would be a great location for a restaurant or two. If something like Red Lobster, Olive Garden, etc. would move in, it might be Martinsburg Mall's last chance to rack in some business. -mmccul

Down here in good ol' Cabell County - there almost is a Walmart at every exit. The new one in Huntington, outside of Barboursville, the Barboursville Walmart, and then the Hurricane Walmart, and then the Nitro/Cross Lanes Walmart... I am sure glad the H'cane Walmart opened up though because I hate barboursville - and it really evened out the crowds a little - so it isn't too bad.
They just developed the "Merritt's Creek Farm" down in B'ville several years ago. It has a Target, Marshall's, etc. Before that we had to go all the way to Corridor G.

Correction: This is the opening date of Target, the other stores will open independently around that time. -mmccul

I am really starting to wonder why The Journal has not written an article on The Commons yet. I am sure that people would love to read about the new exciting stores coming their way. -mmccul
