If its the one I think it is...it might be a little rugged...
Don't let things hold you back...You will find a place and do that soon...just go ask the proprietors of some of the businesses...They know a rental market is there in Thomas and David and have built for that occasion...

I mentioned the Mountain Made building because it is so huge....the basement has it's own entry beside the rear parking lot.
I can't believe that they do not have a space...email: websales@mountainmade.com
or 1-304-463-3355
Explain who you are working for and what you need...sounds crazy...but people will want to help...

Hope the bank bldg apt works out for you. A lot of volunteer ski patrolers and winter employees rent apartments etc just for the winter season so I know short term lease or month-to-month places are available. I just do not know of them or how nice they are.

But snorpus is right. "Downtown" Davis is convenient. Have you been to Canaan Valley before? Even though your apartment is downtown, you won't have to worry about a lot of traffic noise or any noise late at night.

Welcome to Canaan and WV. Don't live there but have a weekend place there. It is gorgeous. Will watch for your car.

Well, I've arrived. I will be staying in a house owned by the refuge for a few weeks. Tomorrow I will start looking around for other places. I'm not terribly picky. I'm not out for something glamorous, just livable. I prefer living by myself for privacy's sake, and the thought of paying $400 for a bunk in a 4 bunk-bedroom (which makes like 8 people in a house) just does NOT appeal. I can pay $400 and get something somewhere else for that kind of money.

I find it hilarious that you guys talk about 'traffic'. I've lived in Lansing, MI for 6 years, on the intersection of two of the busiest roads in town, a block from the hospital and fire department. There's no amount of traffic that can bother me any more.

But WV is gorgeous, and I think I'm never leaving.

Just wait until the cars pile up in that horrible rush hour traffic in Davis. Right in front of the Exxon station...
And Thomas is just as bad...everyone slowing down to a crawl as they drive by the 'Purple Fiddle' to see who's out front smoking a 'joint...I mean cigarette.

$400 a month should get you a place with a servant or two...you will be ok.

What did it take, DK, about six hours for her to fall in love?

I don't think it was even that. Ma loaned me her 'tom-tom' esque GPS unit, which took me the way round-about way here. But it wasn't the second I got off the highway, I was hooked. Driving down by the Cheat River... gorgeous!

Of course, it's raining now and I can't go for a walk or take any pictures. Boo! I might just go drive around, acquaint myself to the area.

The Falls look very spooky and mysterious in a rainy mist. But watch out for deer, they're everywhere.

Down by the 'Cheat River huh? Well, now you know what we are talkiing about...

That little restaurant in Cathedral Park...Debbie's...Debbie Lantz...great breakfast on a Saturday morning and a nice walk in the only 'Old Growth Forest in the East...Sometimes the old stone inn is open too.

Great Canoe trip is to put in at St. George bridge and canoe to the Cheat River bridge. About 15 miles...
Some of the best smallmouth fishing on the planet...and just a little 'Class 3 water.

In about 30 days you will loose that 'gander accent and speak like the natives...

Don't forget to get a gig card for the camera...this will all be a memory in 30 years.

I've got a 2 gig card in right now. I'm an amateur photographer, but I've been published a couple times. I took some interesting shots of some storm clouds coming over Canaan Mountain today.

I'm resisting going for another drive this afternoon. Gas and all. But there's so much STUFF! I want to see everything.

I did run across a little town called Douglas. It was quite gorgeous.

Does anyone have any suggestions for local history books? Or just books about the local area in general? Guides, folklore, etc.

You might look in the gift shops of both Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley State Parks; they have a pretty good selection of books.

Also, in downtown Davis the Visitors Bureau has some books, pamphlets, maps of the area, etc.
