fairmont to beckley
What is the best/quickest way to drive from fairmont to beckley? Google maps says to get off of I-79 at sutton and take rte. 19, almost a straight line all the way. But since I don't know what that road is like, I wonder what about taking the 79 to charleston and then the 77 to beckley? It is obviously longer in mileage but it is all interstate. Can anyone shed some light on this, please?

That route is about 3 yrs old...brand new for us...and when your driving it and seeing the incredible amount of solid rock that had to be moved...think of RCB...best way south and keeps us out of Charleston...just remember to observe the exact speed in Summersville...Lot goin' on down there...Oak Hill and Beckley...Try for lunch at Tamarac.

DK and Google's right.
It's 4 lane, all the way from Sutton to the Turnpike at Beckley, 65 mph most everywhere except in Summersville. It's not Interstate (a few lights and cross traffic), but it's definitely THE way to Beckley, Princeton, and points south.
Probably 2.5 to 3 hrs, depending on whether you stop to eat or get gas.

That's exactly what I needed to know. Thanks, guys. I am, maybe, going to the Tamarack Fest.... maybe. Summersville must be some speed trap, I think I saw that mentioned in some other threads.

It's so bad, a few years ago one of the businessmen in town rented a billboard along 19 to warn people.
Going south, the lowered limit (I forget, either 45 or 55, watch the signs) starts at Nicholas County High School. Stays that way (even though it looks like you're back out in the country) till you pass a big motel (Best Western?) on the right. Just be patient, it seems like you're crawling but it really only takes 5-10 minutes to get through town.

yeah i have relatives near summersville and 119 is the best route from a northern part of WV to the south. As others have said DO NOT SPEED through that town they will get you...been there, done that! Snorpus is right, once you are past the Best Western you are free to put some lead on that peddle and head on down the road.
