Everyone knows we have dirt floors in our cabins...(almost never happened in pioneer times, were puncheons laid out with the cabin base and a layer of wet clay was added to seal the floor from splinters and keep out the insects) and wear buckskin which is cleaned when it rains...enough of that....
Once in an Asia country I had some shirts washed by beating them on rocks...came back with the buttons broken...but clean as snow..

roughing it I've used that method camping. roughing it in the house I've washed things in the farm sink by hand waiting for a washing machine to be hooked up, clotheslines work well. long term plan?? hell no! hahhahaaa I paid my dues!

clay floors DK? slippery when wet I imagine, but there must be wisdom to it just the same. That level of cleanliness wouldn't work in american standards nowadays. I can picture the building inspectors face already.

IF a floor is really beat up and sanding cannot take it all out a person is forced to stain it a little and the Min-wax products are compatible and stain can be tailored to the poly and used without any fuss or extra work...
That's a great looking kitchen by the way, and I really like the dark baseboards and non-traditional color of the base cab's...so much like the days of orange crates and such as my mother had...I'm glad to see us get the view...thanks...I hope that floor has a squeak or two...homes are living things too...just like our pets...
Oh it had a few squeaks. That flooring was from Hicksville Planing, a Mennonite mill outside of Hagerstown MD. Random width red oak, unfinished. About a buck a sq. ft. unfinished.

The baseboard came from there too. Unfinished poplar painted with cabinet grade 'Jutland Pine' green. Our last house was a fine house. Could've retired there but the job kept me going on...

My son's wainscot panels took 2 coats of a Cabot stain, then a light sanding, then 2 coats shellac and a few light sandings. I'll have to post some pics when I get that done. We're using old canoe oars for curtain poles and he has a huge old geological map of West Virginia dated 1916, showing all the coal, gas and limestone deposits in the state. The main walls are a hunter green, with a warm wood stain wainscot on the bottom. Should be very stately for a young man of 10 years. (He picked it).

Love the wood. It makes a home a home.

Poly brings out a nice hue over time. It really reddens it up. Plus it's easy to sand her down and pour another coat on.

There's a political metaphor in this pig manure thing...I'll work on it...could our sewage treatment plants do the same thing...digestors just like they have down on the farm and compliment the brew with higher quality animal waste...and even use regular garbage...

The solution is almost a perpetual motion machine...Of Sorts...Of Sorts..Sort or like the NASA Bathroom appliance (a tube that attaches itself to the body of the astronaut and sucks out the waste product...has to be cleaned manually) everybody in California, as the testing would be done there...hooked up to a tube that digests the product and generates gas for their vehicle...
As they ingest the Tofu and Brussel sprouts the gas is created and burned in the cylinders of the machine...I can see Madame Pelosi going for this one...Research and Development at Berkely...this will fit into the new energy program of 2009. Alternate Fuels...Bio-fuels...perpetual motion...I love it...I only want the patent on those new car seats...it will be a gay revolution if they come with vibrators...

thanks...H/B made my day...got the brain kick started...

Interesting series of articles published in the Washington Post almost 10 years ago. Subject? The perils of......... cheap gas. Worth a read if you can access it.

What I find starkly sobering about the gasoline situation is this...The impact it will have on our economy is a needed factor of about 40% additional income to live the lifestyle we had 2 yeas ago...Consider the fact that our do-nothing Congress decided to buck a sitting President who offered to work on Social Security.

A giant blog of people are moving through a time line...they are called 'Baby boomers...if they can be forced into staying in the work environment and cannot retire they will do the tax collectors a great service...

I'm surprised that the Dem's still intend to Tax and Spend us out of our situation when the working model calls for other measures...tax breaks to create business investment and incentive...something many other socialist leaning countries are implementing into their own economies as we speak...Can we see China...can we see England and France.

The gasoline directed change in our economy will force many of the 'Baby Boomers to work until death...and in doing so, will not be a liability to the Federal Government.

Perhaps this situation was contrived...it certainly fits a solution to a problem that needed solved...and the poor...they never really mattered...did they?

DK I have no idea what gripes people have with pelosi as I've not bothered to turn on a TV for months now. There is far too much propaganda and tripe for me to bother, and publications like reuters don't make commentary about her. Cspan isn't available via rabbit ear antenna.

That said, I'm unhappy with how congress has become... an inept circle jerk. It's not limited to this term, but spans decades. I make allowances for things like the fact that our insane energy policy, fiscal mismanagment of social security, fed actions of nearly 100 yrs, problems too numerous to count and of such a scope to boggle the mind. Most of our problems have been exasperated by additional incompetance brought about by current executive branch. There's plenty of blame to lay at the feet of many people over the course of a century if that would be productive, but...

Present tense Here & Now, we're perpetuating problems and being inactive when we need to be doing something radical to wrest control of runnaway problems. Start with oil, because that's a lions share of our trade deficit and our inflationary index, particularly in light of trends continuing unabated.

Now, as for pig manure, and reclaiming waste stream for positive use... the stench is already there. It makes so much sense its not even funny. At very least it should make municpal trash veritably free service, at best I see government blgs and public projects using cheap/free fuel to keep down operating costs, to the benefit of all taxpayers equally. I'm chuckling over a 'gas hog' in my tank only because I'd sympathize with the poor sucker behind my tailpipe gagging, or worse, convinced dog poo got in his AC system.
(I hope they solve that before it's on the road!)

The money is in the subsidies...the money is in the subsidies...the money is in the subsidies....

Has nothing to do with common sense...any energy policy...any freeing us from oil dependancy...
We could sell our oil to ourselves but it makes a bigger profit on the market...who lobbied to do that?...

Obama will take his turn...money from the Unions...money from the Oil companies and he will tell them how big to write the check...this is the big game...the big dance...
If the election costs a billion, somone has to pay the bill...

The circle goes round and round...the merry-go-round is simply spinning faster than the people like...but whenever have they mattered?

The politico's are getting the money while they can...here, in the mountain state...the subpoenas are flying...the Agency's are recording...the phone lines are tapped and the evidence is being gathered...

When the hit sh*t's the fan...and their Merceds and the BMW's get double clutched...I hope a Demo Paper can find time to print the news...
I was looking at a light green Ford Expedition just the other day and wondered when it would be coming up for government seizure auction...soon, I hope...
I love a house cleaning...especially when its Government House...as the South Africians would say...
