Fayetteville - "Funkytown WV"?
Ok, so I got this promotional packet from that "Roaring River" housing development in Fayetteville. In the promo DVD video they send, it says that Fayetteville is only 4 miles from their community and was voted as "one of America's top ten hippest small towns" or something like that.
I left WV when I was 18 in 1984, and I think it was 1980 the last time I was in Fayetteville. They make it sound like it's hip and funky and has a lot of unique shops and restaurants these days. Is this true?
I'll give these people credit - on the DVD they do a spot about living in Southern WV and mention Charleston being only 65 miles away from the community. They show Charleston from the air and then show the Clay Center and people shopping in unique shops and eating in a cafe - I mean, for a developer, they actually did a better promo for Charleston and that whole area than the Charleston conventions and visitors agency has EVER done for the city (or anyone else). So while I know developers are essentially out to get you to buybuybuy, I'll give them a brownie point for a great promo job for Charleston and that whole region.
Anyway - back to Fayetteville - is it a funky little town, or more sleepy/Mayberryish and just being hyped up for the sake of marketing some property and homes?

Greg: You said it yourself...the promoters did a great job on promoting Charlestown...why wouldn't they do a good job pushing emotional buttons for 'Funkytown. The mind-set is this..Wv, its wild and wonderful...come sit on the porch on weekends and smoke your pot..it's the greatest...listen to the river...listen to the birds...just pay us the money. Wonder who those developers are...certainly out of towners.
Top ten hippest cities? Might have been done at the office with the staff.

Fayetteville is indeed a pretty hip little town. I brought my friends in from Louisville, KY for hiking and rafting a couple of times. They love F'ville. Has some cool shops, and my favorite local pizza joint Pies & Pints.

What could be funkier than a town where you can go jump off a bridge a thousand feet above a very old river that's called New?

I think Fayetteville is more funky than sleepy/Mayberryish -- but of course, everyone has their own defintions. Need to take a trip there and decide for yourself.
Fayetteville is in the heart of the WV White Water Rafting area so it sees people visiting from all over the world and attracts an influx of "river rats" during rafting season (term I have heard guides teasingly call each other - not term I coined for them). It's a beautiful area with good hiking, etc.
It's very small. There are some neat (and very good) restaurants there. Not as many decent places to stay for visitors as would expect. (Some of the cabins are downright scary.) My impression is that most people stay at hotels in Beckley or at Hawks Nest State Park.
Are they promoting second homes or primary ones? I could see it being a good place for a cabin or vacation home.
Surprised I have not seen anything about the 10 ten coolest small town ranking - thanks for the info. Guess it was by Budget Travel mag. I just love it when we (WV)get some good press.
Log Home Living Magazine, Summer 2008/August 2008, has included Davis, WV as one of its 10 Best Places in the US to build a log home. Men's Journal had ranked Davis as one of the top 10 Coolest Mountain Towns.

No - we're talking bucks ($$$$).
There were no specific prices listed in the brochures or on the DVD but online I saw where lots in the community range from $67,000 to over $150,000 just for the land. The developer mentions they played a part in building two of the past HGTV Dream Homes as well, and they shortly blurb about "second home and foreign" investors in the land. Say it... CA-CHING! Looks really nice, but I can't help but think of Eddie Murphy singing that song to me, "You can't affforrrrrrd it!". HERE is the link for their site.
Oh, and David Kennedy - they promoted CHARLESTON... not Charlestown. Charlestown is in the panhandle and I guess never needs promoting due to the DC suburban folks.
