Since gas is so expensive this summer, i'm looking for some short trip (long weekend getaways) vacations.

I'm a newlywed without any kids, and plan to head to Canaan Valley at some point this summer. I don't want to go to Myrtle Beach or the beaches of North Carolina this summer, kinda board with all of that, and want to stay closer to home.

Last weekend me and my brother made a trip to Cinci, watched the Reds play, it was quick, and easy on gas.

I'd think higher elevations of northeastern WV would be perfect way to beat the heat too. Buchannon, elkins have rec areas too, but I haven't been there yet myself.

Summersville Lake, that's a great idea! I haven't been there in 5 years.

Greenbriar county is a lovely area with Lewisburg--a pretty scenic town--at least when I was there a few years ago. It's also probably 2 hrs or so from the Roanoke area of VA (nice city and lovely scenery as well) and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Of course there's the well known resort Greenbriar, which I've heard is fantastic, but I imagine it's expensive.

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I think me and the wife are gonna do Summersville sometime soon.

BJC, that's a nice looking lake house. I don't need a pontoon boat yet. I may be able to borrow my sister's Ranger boat. Thanks for the info though.

No offense meant, but in case you want to do a search, the spelling is actually Greenbrier County. Home | Greenbrier County, West Virginia

Canaan is my fav place in WV.

We have some great State Parks. http://www.wvparks.com/

Fayette County (& surrounding area) has white water rafting and lots of fun things. West Virginia Tourism, Travel and Vacation Planning - Southern West Virginia CVB
