Question? My sister says West Vorginians are hillbillies?
My ister says the West viginians are hillbillies and like the hatfield and Mcoys is this correct? Also she says they are very racist.Please prove her wrong.

If we were backwards hillbillies the way everyone likes to think, we wouldn't have computers and even if we had access to them we wouldn't be able to write a legible sentence. Right? Think about it. I encourage you to look around at some of the pictures on the city data pages for WV cities, read some of the other posts on here and form your own conclusions. Also consider that the Hatfield-McCoy feud happened over 120 years ago and if you actually read up on your history, you'll find that the media of the time exaggerated the Hillbilly image just to sell papers. Much the same in today's media as well. If any other state votes for Hillary over Obama, it's merely because they support Hillary. If it happens in WV though, it merely because of racism. Not because we have the right in this country to vote for whom we choose. You tell me where the prejudice attitudes are.

OK. I was no trying to be sarcastic in any way. I think the people on this board are very friendly. She lives in Ohio and apprently have met some west virginians first hand. I dont know any west Virginians. I am new to these city forums and some day would like to relocate. Many factors I need to take into consideration. I am from Minnesota and because I know cold weather is normal for Minnesota and I am used to it. Hot weather might be hard for me to adjust to. Thats just an example. I truly dont mean to offend anyone. Sorry!!

None taken. But that's a real example of the ignorance of folks not in WV. They are lumping the whole state on a couple people. There are no couple or three or even dozen people capable of accurately representing any one city - much less an entire state.
Personally, I would hope she continue to believe whatever she wants. For now, it's still a free country and our men in uniform are losing their lives so that we can continue to bash each other here at home - all in the name of freedom. So I'm gonna turn up the AC, pop a DVD in the set, set the microwave to spit out some popcorn and watch Deliverance in the truest form of our hillbilly ways. Of course, I'll wash the popcorn down with ice cold Bailey's Irish Cream rather than moonshine.
Some of us are just not with the program, if ya know what I mean...

Nobody mentions the Hatfield who was county sheriff back in the Mine War days. Stood up against the detectives/thugs the company owners sent into the mine fields, got shot dead on the steps of the county courthouse.
My GF's great grandfather (or maybe great-great) was a Hatfield, brother to Anse. We visited the cemetery where Devil Anse is interred, down near Matewan.

I have run into some prejudice while living in California due to my not being a fake, plastic you-know-what, 
And; I spent a week or few each summer in Charleston from ca. 1960? to 1967 so my memories of at least that part of W Va. are quite pleasant------much more so than where I grew up, the Wash DC metro area. |
