Well, ok, some posts are predictable but I think it's marvellous that so many people are living in a place they love.

Still, so many recommendations for the "far" end of the state (in my Maryland-related situation)...no votes for anywhere in the eastern panhandle at all??

(Does that TELL me something??)

I've always recommend Mobley and Mobley isn't my hometown...I was born in Pine Grove..what's a hometown when everybody moves to another every 5.5 years..

Lady: the mountains of the eastern panhandle are forboding to some...harsh in the winter, dry in the summer, prickley pear catus to sting a persons toes...sheep country...but a trout or two will lie in the shady pools of those mountain streams..
When the settlers came here those mountains were a barrier against old Virginia and its attitudes...most of the settlers were Scotch or Irish...they settled the lowlands and farmed the rich soil...once in a while a poster will take the role but most of them seem to be moving further inland..3 run being the latest example...

DK I was mightily impressed by their majesty, but my broken thermostat from one too many episodes of hypothermia won't abide those extremes of winter anymore.
Are trout still mainly native trout in WV or are they mostly the fish farm stocked trout for tourists? Just curious because the sportsmen on the virginia side of the mtns were complaining about it.

Creemarie is from Morgantown but now lives in and usually recommends Huntington.

Harborlady isn't from Charleston but she often tries to let people know of what it has to offer.

You yourself are from Parkersburg but often recommend Morgantown.

So it's not always about recommending your hometown but rather the place where you currently live. If someone didn't like it enough to live there, they probably wouldn't recommend it.

Strip mining and deep mining (as the waste water in the mines was pumped out into the streams) killed most of the trout in Wv..
The native trout is the Brook Trout..and still exist it the higher mountain water...a horrible fight is insue at Caanaan because of the misplacement of 3.5 million dollars that was supposed to go for a sewage treatment plant for that area..undercover, the state de-reclassified 5 natural water streams that emerge from that high country, in order that treated sewage could be spread on open fields and matriculate to the lower waters...DNR (Frank Jezerio) and Trout Unlimited along with the wishy-washy Serria Club, jumped stiff legged...now the FBI is looking for that money...

You asked about trout and I got sidetracked on a West Virginia news story that is not really making the news..

About 15 years ago the Federal Government had a trout stocking program in place, they handed that over to the state...been slipping ever since...and hunters and fishermen are dwindling...so the money gets smaller every year...It's paid for by them, squarely on their backs...our DNR is the poorest of the poor and the very best in their service..they deserve a great credit for their work...

The trout stocking program should get a big handout from the stashes of gambling money...it's tourist oriented and big fish mean lots of tourists...
Our Fly Fishing Only waters are managed nicely and reap a reward for those who really like to tie into a big trout...
We always take some Cod or Pearch to fry over the campfire...turn the live ones back...they have done their job, IMO just by tugging on the line...thanks for asking.
Licensing fees are going up...but still a bargain...

You're right about the media white out- I googled that guys name and nothing but fluffernutter came up.
But hey- I did trip over elk sightings in WV. Apparently the hunters in boone county are drooling at kentucky border with come hither looks, while the DNR is shooing them off. LOL
WV Hunting - Are Elk in WV???

Hey, don't forget me. OK, I live in the Chas area and am partial to it, love Canaan Valley area, but I still suggest other places I know at least a little about. Hard to recommend places know nothing about.

We heard through the grapevine that coal people had brought the elk in to their land for hunting (in southern WV). Don't know if that is true.

PLEASE... no one bring them into Canaan Valley or elsewhere in WV. Everyone I know from the area of Buckhannon, Canann, etc. has either hit a deer or a family member has. Also, except for in winter, you can't drive up I-79 without seeing a dead deer along the road that someone has hit.

Visited an elk farm in Colorado -- those animals are HUGE! Can you imagine hitting one of those when driving at 70 MPH!

Yeah they are huge, so are moose. Problems when over development happens, their habitat gets too thin, they start migrating where they ought not to be.

Pa was having regular run ins with bears on suburban streets. Kids were trapped in the house not able to catch school bus because bears started figuring what was trash day. Not far from stroudsburg area if I recall correctly.

The Ulster Scots (or Scots-Irish)moved west into the familiar hard scrabble life their ancestors endured to avoid contact with the colonialists who viewed them as poor and sub-standard.

And 300 years later nothing much has changed, huh?

My father's side is Scots-Irish, settled into North Carolina and Georgia. Very fiesty group.
