Check to see if a chapter of the International Womans Club exists...I'm sure they do...Meet at least once a month for activities...from many different countries..will help with the acclimation to the area...and several will be German...

Helvetica (Very Small Town) in the mountains of Randolph County was settled as a German community probably 150 years ago. Because it is so isolated they have retained much of their ancestory, the last time I was there a few of the older locals still spoke German. They have some sort of festival, I'm not really sure what it is called but I'm sure you would really enjoy it.
From Elkins take US 219 South to Mill Creek and then like county road 46 or something... Try searching for some information on the web about it or perhaps someone else on here might know something about the festival, etc
Best of luck to you

I did some googling and found this article which might interest you. It might also give you a better idea of what gottaherdon was mentioning about small cloisters of german culture rooting. It's historical account.

Heineken is Dutch. We'll have to verse you on some REAL beer someday...
There are a lot of German / Dutch speaking peoples / lineage in the Eastern Panhandle region of WV, stretching up into PA and a tad over to MD. Hagerstown MD is considered a German settlement and it is deeply rooted in German culture and its evidence is readily seen. The sister city for Hagerstown is Wesel Germany. There is a FANTASTIC German restaurant called Schmankerl Stube http://www.schmankerlstube.com/ that my wife and I loved to dine at. My wife is of German ancestry (her mom is from Bavaria and came to the states after WWII) and most of her mom's family lives in Germany. My mom's side is also German, her peoples settled in Northern Ohio in and amongst the Dutch and Amish.
There are a lot of Mennonite and Amish peoples in and around the valley regions of MD, PA and OH, with a few in WV, a lot of whom still speak Platt or Pennsylvania Dutch (similar to Platt). There may be some influence in the Ohio river valley area of WV, but I'm not too sure.
I know you will definately find or run into German folks in the eastern panhandle region, so Shepherdstown WV, Sharpsburg and Hagerstown MD would be welcoming towns. The old stone buildings were mostly made by German masons, and they are quite something to see.
Here is a nice little history of Hagerstown- enjoy and good luck! Schmankerl Stube Bavarian Restaurant - Hagerstown, Maryland
