You however don't seem to care what happens to the rest of the state as long as WVU is built up. So who is exhibiting the "clan" mentality. You tell me. I've already told you that I went to WVU (never took a class at MU) and I can show plenty of examples of where money is being poured into ventures there with without the best return but like you, I won't get into that. Again, my interests are for the state and it's advancement.
That's all I'll say as again, we are going to just have to agree to disagree or this will go on forever and that's not what this forum is about.

Fine, but why should you get the last word? Did I say nobody benefitted from opening the unneeded Medical School? Obviously someone benefitted from it. Who didn't benefit from it is the State that funded it. The reason is it diverted funding from other more necessary projects. Take a look at Huntington and what are the greatest needs there. They don't really need any new physicians in Huntington. Training more physicians wouldn't result in them staying in Huntington anyway. What they need in Huntington, and the entire Huntington region, is industry and jobs. They need jobs related to the strengths of the region. In that region it is basically coal, river transportation, and other similar endeavors.
The major push at Marshall should be to develop courses of instruction dealing with coal mine research, training supervisors, mine engineers, various business professions, the traditional role for Marshall which is as a teacher training institution, and transportation executives. The money thrown down the drain for an unnecessary medical school, just so Marshall can say they have one, would have been much better spent on developing an energy research capability. That is something that would have truly benefitted the Huntington area and the entire State. Part of it could have also gone to support pay raises for some the the Nation's poorest paid instructional staff. That money would have stayed in Huntington too. I won't go futher into this, but there are several instances of poor money management and planning at that institution that are ongoing today.

As well it should be... WVU has extensive experience at conducting research. But, there is no reason Marshall couldn't participate in conducting that sort of research too. There is a great need for it. If they actually had a cooperative attitude instead of a competitive one they probably would be invited to take part.

However, the growth in terms of raw population will be more to Mon County...not as much to Morgantown proper. Mon County WILL overtake Cabell County in the next 5-7 years in raw population. I have no doubt. Kanawha Co is too huge for Mon Co to try to even think about. 190k people...yeah.

That's because geographically Kanawha is the size of three counties. Much of it is barely populated though. My ex-wife was from Cedar Grove, and you could take a pack horse and 5 hours to get to Pond Gap. The Kanawha area is almost exactly the same size geographically as North Central... Monongalia, Harrison, and Marion counties. Add the populations of those counties together and it is nearly identical to Kanawha, so the population density is about equal. The difference is the growth rate. Considering that most of the Mon growth is actually immediately adjacent to but outside of the city limits of Morgantown, the area will eventually take over as the largest, and that doesn't even count the more than 28,000 students.
I don't mean that as anything negative about Charleston. And, due to state government largely being located there it will always largely hold its own (it won't dip below 45,000 no matter what happens). But the contrast in growth rate, and seemingly in activity is startling.
