I know that ginseng season is from sept. 1st through nov. 30 every year, but i was wondering about yellow root. Does yellow root have a season or can it be dug anytime? I have checked the DNR and the WV Division of Forestry web sites, but all they have is info on ginseng. Also does anyone know anywhere in Jackson Co. WV that buys yellow root?

It's a wild plant that grows in the woods, it's roots are used in medicine and some people use the roots to make tea. It's similar to ginseng, but its alot more comon and easyer to find than ginseng.

wvwhisker I think if you wanted to be absolutely certain you'd have to stop by a park ranger station for the land in question. Some park lands in america prohibit removing ANYTHING (even a measley rock, a cutting, or a ziplock baggie of dirt). Ask them to list what's permitted and not instead of specifically bringing up your root. It might draw needless legislation.

mark that web definition-- yellow root, not to be confused with yellow root. Too funny!

My grandmother kept yellow root in her frig all the time. I don't remember her every saying anything about it being seasonal. She lived at Crow Creek Valley of Lost Cove Tennessee. She would tell me to go get it...we washed it & put it in a jar of water with a lid & let it set. Then if you were sick it was there to drink.

Leave it alone. Let it grow. When you need it, it will be there.

There is no season or restriction on the harvesting and selling of yellow root. You can dig it any time. Some dealers will also buy the tops.
