I live up a "holler" and every time it rains hard we are sweating a flood.

Won't miss that one.
We were at a Fed/state park in Maui and the signs in the stalls in the women's bathroom said:
"Do not drink the water in the toilets."
I really think our govt goes overboard in warning us not to harm ourselves.

There is a post on the Ohio forum titled "Appalachian Ohio boundaries...and lifestyle" that I can't wait to keep an eye on (no replies yet). Part says " I've heard the culture of Appalachian Ohio mirrors West Virginia". Oh boy, it will be interesting to read. Are we going to have to defend our state? May be another war between the North and South (OK, regarding the whole South thing - just bare with me here).

Gotta drive thru a couple of low lying towns to check out (in the valley), First once in the Beckley area head towards the Logan area by hitting 85 crossing over Kopperston Mountain, the view is breathe taking. Connect to Rt 10 and drive thru Oceana, Man, Logan and to Charleston and then towards Huntington or back to Beckley again on the turnpike. Now that's some driving with allot of scenery

CRFTony, I am new here & catching up on old things. What was your Granpa's name? My mother-in-law's mother was from the Helvitia area & I know of many of her stories about the people there.
I would love to hear back from you.

I found the name of the town was Silica & it was a booming little logging & coal mining town in the 1940's. They had a HUGE snowstorm in April of 1943 that was the "talk of the town" for years. Silica has all but disapeared & became just a memory.
