I'm not being petty or ridiculous. You just need to get your facts straight. You are making comments based solely on speculation and false information. This website is here to give people factual information about the state along with experiences in order to give them an idea of what it's like to live here. Speaking of establishing a new US capital in Northern WV is completely speculation and nothing about it is true. And growth of the state is wonderful but 85,000 more people will still leave that region about 300,000 people behind the Huntington/Charleston region. So what exactly do I have to be jealous of?

Dave Kennedy, I believe that TBailey did read your comments clearly-- it looks like he QUOTED them in his post!

I think that everyone on this thread needs to quit bickering about which part of the state is better, north central or southern, eastern panhandle or northern panhandle. You all soulnd like a bunch of kids on the playground chanting the usual, "my dad's bigger than your dad." Why can't you boast and be proud of the state as a whole? West Virginia is a great place and has something to offer to just about everyone. I think that we should look at growth in WV, no matter where it is taking place, as a positive. People tend to get too caught up in the numbers game, be it dollar signs or population statistics.

I grew up in Morgantown (and graduated from WVU) and have lived in Huntington now for the past three years. Both parts of the state are growing, not dying, which is a good thing. Both MU and WVU are growing, not dying, which is also a good thing. I am a WVU fan, I bleed Blue and Gold, but I want to see Marshall do well and succeed, because they are a West Virginia school. I want to see them (MU) contiune to grow and compepte with WVU in both acedemics and athletics. Healthy competition is good for growth; without it, both will become stagnant.

I want to see the ENTIRE STATE grow and do well. I don't understand how people can belittle other parts of the state, downplay growth in certain parts of the state, and then make OUTRAGEOUS CLAIMS about their own repsepcive parts of the state.

Can't we all just get along???

Finally, as for the claims that north central WV will become the next US capital, ummmm... I don't think so. If they want to move it someplace safe because of the rising sea levels or whatever you say is going to happen, I think they might consider moving it somewhere out west-- far, far away from the ocean.

Well said Creemarie. As I said before, no fighting is intended. However, when I feel that growth in one area is being downplayed and growth in another area is being exaggerated when I have ties/knowledge of both areas being discussed, then I feel that the facts need to be put on here for people to see along with links to back the info up when possible. Otherwise, we could all make stuff up and pass it along as being the truth. I want to see all of WV do well and hopefully we can use this forum to help with that.

We are all in agreement with that last statement "Wanting to see all of WV do well and hopefuly use this forum to help with that."
The funding is not in an equal porportioninate disbursement...the North Central Region is getting the lions share for a reason...the reasons are the future environmental fragility and vulnarability of DC.

The speculation lies in your minds because it seems so incredible.

Last month the 5 governors involved and Home Securtity leaders met at the Greenbrier to discuss the mass exodus out of DC if/when an attack would happen. I listened for the press releases intently and about a week later on Public Radio got this bit of hoke'...that if a mass exodus were to happen, the hundreds of thousands of evacuees would be herded along I-68 and into the heartland of Ohio, Indiana and Illionois.

If (my opinion) DC is evacuated, the leaders will be brought here and the rest will be stranded on the roads just like the movie, Doomsday...that's my speculation as to what will happen, and no one will get south on I-79 into the Clarksburg area unless they are already here or they have a government pass.
Lets not argue about it...at least you know...just watch and keep your ears open...

One last point and then I'm done. If "the North Central Region is getting the lions share" of federal funding as you posted above, then why is Monongalia county going to be the first in the state to have a county wide user fee? Cities have done this and Morgantown is also considering a city wide user fee, but this will be the first county. This increases the liklihood that many in the county will be taxed twice. From the WBOY article "Monongalia County Commissioner Bob Bell said the commission is exploring the user fee because the county has been repeatedly told by both the state and federal governments that there is no extra funding for new road construction." If that area is getting so much federal/state funding, why are they being told there is none to give? Here's the link. It will be interesting to see what happens when home rule is instituted for cities and payroll taxes become an option. Just food for thought.

Because the entire GNP of Germany probably isn't enough money to fix the transportation system in Morgantown. And...yes...that's an exaggeration.

For 5 years, I sat on our county's planning commission as an advisor. Our congressman would send people to tell us what we were going to do. Sometimes he would come himself. It was new then, the creation of the "Revenue Stream"..."the revenue stream was green he would say...
because is was cash". The attitude was disgusting to me at the time because our local and regional economy were in shambles. Coal was at
zero and a former governor had killed the fiscal apparatus of the state.
I could not fathom how these people could talk about this new horrendous tax load. One lady assistant to the congressman told me plainly. "If they can't pay the fees..they will have to move away."

Morgantown has long looked at the 'Homerule' in Pittsburgh...It will backlash just as it has there, in time. It is a test case for many other cities in West Virginia. You will see it soon. Many cities in other states have a City Income Tax...this would lead to a revolt here but usually the amount is .1%
The people moving in to our region are comfortable with these taxes and our political hacks know this...It's about the money.
Morgantown's problem could be helped by voting in a new congressman from their town...unfortunately that potential candidate is not the right one and everyone knows that....stalemated.

So what do you do...the democratic thing...raise taxes..tutition...tourism tax on your drive-through burgers...automatic tax increases by the legislature for the property taxes..hidden taxes on the telephone, insurance...$20 donation to Habitat for Humanity when you transfer a Deed...(and I like them and support them)...and everything that can be taxed or thought of, will be taxed...
Not a mention of Oversite or...Fiscal Acountability Committee's ...

Case in point: New 21 million dollars water treatment plant in Fairmont. Reverse osmosis system to provide water for 80,000 homes. Water source: Tygart Valley River.
No one thought that the water needed to be pre-filtered because the company building it was from Canada and the lake water there is clean. The old Fairmont treatment system was removed, not considered as a back-up system...it was up gradeable by the way...just a few million would had done the job.
New system plugs up and loads with parasites...solution:
Raise water fees $10 a month to repair the new system...will take 3 to 4 years to get the system in compliance...
This is what we have in these local governments...twits...
I know I'm in violation of high jacking this thread...but I hope you will see the importance of this information...dk

I've heard of the ideas that DK talks about. However, the entire state of West Virginia would be impacted. Mercer county has had a plan to accomodate 100,000 more people from the DC metroplex, if something were to happen.

Basically, the eastern seaboard would start here. Developed areas such as Charleston and Huntington would get a great number - due to the urban-to-suburban exodus that left the central communities with plenty of housing/land availability. Not to mention, both towns have infrastructure the supersede any other town in the state.
