And again I state... it might be promoted (I've never seen it) but the vast majority of residents aren't following suit, hence the title of this thread.
Also, like I said, I grew up/spent 22 years of my life in WV, I know pretty much everything there is to know about the state. I moved to the DC area four years ago so it's not like a lot has changed since then. I still go back to visit at least 4 times per year, I notice the exact same things.
Why is it that people who live in WV have such a hard time dealing with basic facts like the state population is obese or the economy is atrocious? These issues are all so blatantly obvious you don't even need statistics to prove it.

I dunno, I've just never felt the state as a whole was southern. But I've seen it grouped in the southern, midwestern, and northern categories. Oh well, I guess it changes on who you ask. ha ha

GHO I know we've been through this before, but I agree with you 100%. I never felt like a southerner even growing up in Charleston.

Well, I don't know why anyone would want to say they are a "Mid-Atlantician" rather than a "Southerner". What does that mean? I realize West Virginia is known for its wide beaches, and West Virginia oysters are famed throughout the world. But 'Mid-Atlantic"?

Kentucky borders Ohio and they are considered Southern. WV is not east of Ohio, it's actually southeast.
Most West Virginians who claim to be Northerners are just brainwashed by our Civil War history, which does not tell the whole story. 24 of our counties actually supported the Confederacy during referendum in 1861. However, most West Virginians unfortunately do not know this.
No offense Alice, but WV is definitely not in the Mid-Atlantic. WV shares more in common with Tennessee than it does with New York.

Southern Governors to Develop Energy Plan
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) - Southern governors are working on a comprehensive plan to reduce the South's carbon footprint and create jobs.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine says it's a real opportunity for the region.
Kaine says southern states are already working individually to reduce energy use and develop better technology, but need a unified voice to help shape the national debate.
Kaine and other governors discussed the initiative today during the Southern Governors Association meeting at The Greenbrier in West Virginia. Kaine is the association's incoming chairman and will lead the initiative.
West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin says more federal research dollars are needed to develop clean-coal technologies, especially if coal is going to continue to account for about half of the nation's energy use.

Why can't we simply say "we're West Virginians"? Seems everyone needs to associate themselves with a greater collective for some reason.

DK, I thought the other thread title sounded like a 1950's Sci-Fi Thriller, like, "Attack of the West Vorginians". "From the Planet West Vorginia they came, in space craft made of split logs, a tall race, wearing wide-brim hats and bearing double-barreled ray-guns---"We have come for your white women, and corn liquor--though not especially in that order."

No wonder the rest of America is baffled by us - we are baffled ourselves. Some identify as a southern state, others as a northern state, others as Mid-Atlantic. If anyone from WV comes along who says they consider themselves as being from the East, West, or Mid-West, I think I will faint.
Had a friend from Wheeling who got very upset about the thought that she was referred to as a Southerner. Clearly identified with being a Northerner and was a little snobby about it.
