Yea, the rock cliffs are best experienced, can't capture that very well on pixels. That was a fairly tame road compared to some of the other trails we've crept along. Although those switchbacks would be a bit hairy in a street vehicle.
If you have an atv or a rhino type sled, there is a ride somewhere (it's always somewhere!) near Pickens on Saturday. I'll resize some pics from a spring Pickens ride.

The spring atv ride around the Pickens area.
the proper method for creek crossing
it did not depend on how much beer one consumed, the mud hole always won

I know this guy is not Wesley. Tell your nephew we're doing this again Saturday! There were around 290 riders on this day.

Charleston - Mid 1980s...
I just got a film adapter for my flatbed scanner (cheap), and while digging through some old boxes found some negatives from a film camera I used back in the early/mid 1980s.
I left Charleston in 1984, and I think it was in 1986 when they started renovating downtown. Before then, most of the building facades were just old tan brick, and there were no trees planted on the sidewalks at all. Very standard industrial town look to it.... similar to what you see here in front of the old "Virginian" theater (I think this was taken in 1986):
After the renovation of Capitol Street, the new trees were still very short and young. It looked great back then, because they hadn't yet grown up, and you could still clearly see the fronts of all the buildings (again, I believe taken in the 1986/87 time frame):
This final scan is the worst of them as the negative had some damage to it. It's the skyline as seen from the Kanawha City side of the river, I believe in the Winter of 1985 on my first visit back home after moving:

I'll check the time on that clock tomorrow . . hasn't worked since I moved here in '07, and looks suspiciously like the same time it was twenty some years ago.
