Did you say cat-tails? I've NEVER heard of anyone eating those. Which part of the cat-tail do you use? Have heard of people using the fluffy part (when they are about ready to burst open) for padding for warmth in jackets - like down.

You pick mushrooms and eat them. Either you are very knowledgeable or very brave.

Cat Tails...Typha maxima latifolia....

One of the secret foods of indian lore...and so nourishing...and now is the time for harvest...

Root, stalk and frond are edible...leaves are used in basketry...

Roots are starchy like potatoes...wash and grind into a paste or dice them...a little salt and pepper fired in a skillet...not bad...

Stalk: wash and cut into inch pieces and bake on open fire or longer and do with butter as corn on the cob...

Frond: The p'iece de re'sistance...wash with water, boil in water with a pinch of salt...when done, butter and eat the pollen ball...takes exactly like corn..is really delicious...do not eat the spine in the center...

Cattails? One of the wonders of a survivalist world...

Ramps. Ramps should be the official state food.

IIRC, you eat the roots of the cat tails, which are a bit like spaghetti.

Dandelion greens are another old favorite. I should try making them next spring.

Could I get my lot classified as a farm, since I seem to grow an excellent crop of dandelions every spring?

That would be great if you could get a farm exemption for that, lol.

Blackberries. They are everywhere, everyone eats them, you don't have to explain them, and they are delicious when picked wild in all parts of the state. Way better than the cultivated varieties.

Or groundhog. They taste like chicken and also everywhere in the state.

Of course there is always road kill du jour.

Tomatoes are probably more popular in WV than anywhere in the world. Fried green ones are great, but so are the yellow ones that you can't find other places.

When I was in New Mexico the legislature voted for the bizcochito as the state cookie. Biscochitos, Bizcochitos, Anise Seed Cookies, Cookie Recipe, New Mexico State Cookie

My mom used to make Carmel Dumplings: so sweet you can get diabetes just by saying the name. I vote for that as the state dessert.
