I thought Obama was one of the people running for President. Is race one of the major issues in the presidential race? And here I thought all eyes were on the economy. What can you expect from me, after all, I'm a West Virginian.

i don't know why people thinks stuff like this i love everyone no matter what their race .i only speak for myself but for me i like obama i surely don't want mccain in there i liked hillary clinton but she is not on the ticket anymore .i think like the game said in his song this is not about race now ,well i dont think that anything should be about race or gender i really hope obama gets it and gives the changes he said he would and i think this will make black people feel better because theres just as many white people voting for obama as there are blacks so please america stop these racial slures and bull crap thats what is weong with the world now

I grew up in the valley mostly in Putnam county bordering Kanawha , I worked in Charleston , and during college had friends all over the valley from eastern kanawha to lin. county, and northern kanawha , my sister lived in morgantown for 4 years not a college student but lived with the locals, my in-laws live in fairmont. From my experiences in WV, racism seems to be worse in the Valley , then anywhere else especially the rural areas. reason being, one they think they are from the deep south, you see more rebel flags then american. There still is a lack of diversity , not much of a black middle class. The reason I feel the rest of the state is more progressive toward race is because from clarksburg up they are more influenced by northern cultures being located in the Pittsburgh metro area, and many of the southern coal towns have black populations that have the history of working in the mines along the side of the whites there. I can't claim to know anything about the eastern panhandle, I have never even been there so no comment. In conclusion West Virginians are good people , if your are nice they will look past skin color. Even in the Valley ,it is not as bad as certain areas , of the deep south.

Part of the 'Media Hype of this years election is to create hate...if hate can be created then 'Change can be forced into the system...It's logical...Hate is bad..so we need change...
The problem is...people do not really hate...they are pleasant and happy...it is against their inner natures to hate unless its fostered and taught..I have never seen an infant with the propensity to hate..
We are given a Guilt Trip with this election because a non white person in the race...I wish it was someone with credentials and qualifications...Colin Powell is not running...and he has not give his endorsement to Obama...The media said he was going to but it never happened to my knowledge...the endorsements didn't come from the non-convicted felons of the black community either...telling me that NO DEAL was crafted...
The Presidency takes a manager...Colin Powell or any high General gains those skills..and Powell was a great manager...part of it is about experience and learning the job...
McCain, as a POW, has my respect for that...but I do not see him as a manager either...a loose cannon aiming in one direction and then another...
With Obama, the money will be spent/stolen on/for the cronies at home...with McCain, the resumption of the GWB government...neither acceptable...
We get what we deserve...because we put up with it/them.

I'm pretty sure West Virginia is the Whitest state in the United States; in terms of just White people. It has the fewest non-Whites.

How discriminatory and stereotypical of you DK! Calling coal "black" is bad for the coals ego, and sets it behind in the race for equality among the fuels of the world. We need to level they playing field!! What we need are federal subsidies, tax breaks, quotas and grants to investigate the problems of discrimination toward coal. I mean really, if coal wasn't "black" you would probably see a "coal pump" at the gas station, right?? But noooo, only gas, and diesel- because it's not black. I tell ya, Jesse and Al are going to take this cause to the masses!! Jesse and his "rainbow coalition" will fix this despicable issue. If a rainbow represents all the colors, how come I don't see any white in it? Hmmmm. Geez, WVinians are soooo racist!
~Mark
BTW- if Obama is half white and half black, why do we call him black? Won't he be the first "brown" president?

That makes me sooooo iritated -- Obama on TV stating that he is African American; playing the race card; etc. I fully understand why he does it - to get the black vote. Also understand that back in the day, if you had one drop of black blood you were concerned black.
However, people have been working for years to try to unite the country and stamp out racism. Yet this man, who chances are will become President, has been playing the race card to get elected. I think his campaign should have put more emphasis on his bi-racial heritage. Yes, they did in the beginning but then that disappeared.
I also get sooooo angry when I see commentators on TV saying that if you don't vote for Obama you are racist. Excuse me, I don't care if he is pink with purple polka dots. I'm voting for the person who I think is going to do less damage to my pocketbook and is better for the economy.
