I went over to the Shortline yesterday for Alumni Weekend.
The trees are just starting to turn along Fishing Creek, not much color at all yet. No long lines of flatlanders headed up Barker Run. No traffic jams in Mobley.
Just returned from Nicholas and Greenbriar counties, still alot of green on the mtns, but what trees are changing are very pretty. I would guess that the trees in that are should be in full fall beauty after the 15th of October is the weather stays about the same as it was over this past weekend.
Here in the Beverly, Elkins area I would say it's about 50-75% peak. The mountains right behind the Walmart (Chenowith Creek area) are looking at 75%, while other areas are less. They are so beautiful in color!
As to Canaan:
Some years all the trees peak at one time and the whole mountains are "on fire". Looks like this year is going to be one where they go in stages - can't imagine leaves on the trees which are already at peak will hang on too long and until the other trees are in their glory. Once in a while the trees never seem to really peak - just sorta turn then fall off. Glad we are not having one of those kind of years.
I was going to suggest Route 9 towards Paw Paw but went through there this weekend and the trees look a little dry. The trees in Paw Paw have started to change and dry up at the same time. Apparently they haven't had the rain like we have at home, even the weeds were all brown like someone sprayed weed killer on them. The trees haven't really been pretty for a couple of years because of the lack of rain.
