A couple years ago when the kids were real little (3 and 5) we rode the scenic train in Cass during peak times.
That's a glorious ride. Just make sure you bring some wool blankets and a thermos of warm drink!

And the peak for Cass, especially "up on the mountain", is likely to be from the 4th week of September to the 2nd weekend in October.
Full winter clothing (gloves, scarves, warm jackets) is definitely required. One year we rode to Bald Knob on the last run of the year (end of October, past peak for color), and it couldn't have been any warmer than 40 degrees up there.

The leaves in Canaan Valley are starting to change - not a lot of them but a few. A tree by our place is completely orange.
For anyone traveling this way over Labor Day, bring your jackets. At 8 pm last night it was 65, right now (8 am) it is 59. It's supposed to get to 77 today and 80 tomorrow. (Compared to Charleston, it had gotten "clear down" to 78 at 8 pm last night and is to be 87 today and 89 tomorrow).

About Cass... just keep in mind that Cass itself is a bit over 2000' ASL, and Bald Knob is about 4200 feet. So up on the mountain will start changing much sooner. I'd say mid-September to Oct 1 would be best for Cass RR, while most of the Potomac Highlands the peak is probably Oct 1-15.
In the same neck of the woods, the Highlands Scenic Highway, from Slaty Fork to Cranberry Glades, is a beautiful drive.

Look forward to taking a lot of autumn pics of West Virginia. Thanks for the links.
Post or PM me when Canaan Valley is closer to camera ready so I can watch the weather and plan a trip up to shoot the hell out of the place.
Noted last year, along the Appalachian Ridge, it's camera ready in mid-September around Bluefield, elevation 2600ft.
