Fairmonts Elks club on the west-side of where the old nickle bridge used to be is currently being torn down...by currently I mean as I am typing this! I just came from that area and flashing red lights caught my eye so I drove over and couldn't get down the hill to make a left onto the street in front of 'Yann's Hotdogs' because there is a firetruck there with its red lights on and a rather large group of people standing in the street looking over the hill at the building. I was very surprised by this as I had been in attendance at the Fairmont City Council meeting on July 22, 2008 when it had been stated that there would be a 60-day waiting period before it would be torn down. Sadly, the cost for restoring this historic landmark was quoted as being $650,000 --- due in most part to the fact that it had sat empty for so long and regret was expressed by many that no one had taken an interest in aquiring this building a couple years ago when the cost would have been much less. It was also requested that there be obtained a few more estimates at what a restoration of the facade would actually cost as the $650,000 amount seemed high. (It is a lot of money! But these types of endeavors are rarely ever cheap.) I don't know what happened between that council meeting and this moment, but whatever it was has cost our city yet another piece of its history and its heart.
