The Highlands is the biggest black eye ever to hit the region. Just think of what they could've done with that money to historic downtown Wheeling. Rehabbed unique architecture, keeping the town one of a kind, encouraging tourism. Now a fake rock wall at the Highlands when there's the real thing all around you outdoors? Way off base. No wonder the city is going downhill fast. Think, politicians, think!

Well, to tell you the truth the Bishop didn't do anybody any favors when he cajoled local leaders into tearing down a historic block in East Wheeling and having the city build him a football field on it for Central.

My one huge complaint about the Highlands is they completely dropped the ball and didn't put in any sort of a bike trail or jogging path or anything. That was a completely wasted opportunity with all of that land.
Not to mention the Highlands isn't really walkable in general.. I think they should have connected the segments of it together better and this is where the jogging/bike trail could have came into play.
Sports for kids is really big in the area, for better or worse. It's like all some people care about. It can get a little annoying to be honest. They probably think the sports complex will be pretty popular in the colder months.
They are still working on downtown but it's a work in progress for sure. The Boury Lofts is a renovated old building with the original industrial era water tower on top of it. They are working on another similar project right across the street by the arena I believe. The Health Plan building will be finished soon and that will be a busy place.
The community college wants to buy like 3 more buildings on Market Street and expand even more. So that would be 3 more old historic buildings torn down most likely.
The problem is some buildings in the historic parts of the city parts of the city need more work than others and sometimes the people that own them just let them sit and do nothing with them. Then it gets to the point where they're in such bad shape they just end up getting torn down.
As CTMountaineer said a lot of old buildings in East Wheeling were torn down sadly and I believe the catholic church did have something to do with that, they wanted a new football field.
Just spent a week in Wheeling and think it is a very underrated city. The wealth of beautiful old buildings and the Ohio River running through downtown is pretty amazing. One thing I did not notice is bike paths, maybe I just missed them and the weather was not great for riding during our stay. The town is surrounded by wooded hills and it has wonderful old neighborhoods with some local restaurants that seem out of the 50's / 60's with really good food and super nice and friendly people. There are several good and more trendy places in town but for pure throw back can the Alpha be beat and the food is really good! I hope the powers that be in Wheeling realize they need to preserve all this going forward it cannot be replaced. Look at what other small cities are doing by way of renovation it will pay off. I imagine rents in town are reasonable so if you want to open a small business in a cool old building with lots of character look at Wheeling I think it is ripe for a new lease on life!!!
The Festival of Lights at Oglebay, which is absolutely among the world's best municipal parks, is underway with the park's 1,700 manicured acres turned into a holiday wonderland.
