Default Northern Panhandle

Is anyone from the Northern Panhandle of WV? Between Ohio and Pa. What do you think of the area and have you ever been to Mountaineer Racetrack?

I don't live in the panhandle, but my aunt and uncle live in Wheeling. It's a bit economically depressed. Never been to the racetrack, but I have been to the casino in Chester!

what information are you looking for? the northern panhandle, specifically hancock county, is somewhat an economically depressed area. the steel mill is barely hanging on. there are several small towns .... new cumberland, chester, new manchester and newell.

it's been alot of years since i've been to the horse races there, but i've been to receptions and parties at the casino several times over the past couple of years. it's a nice weekend, if you are considering a visit.

are you thinking about moving there? weirton and chester are fairly nice towns, and probably offer a nice family environment with pretty affordable housing. pittsburgh is only 30 miles or so away, and alot of folks commute to that area for work.

i grew up in the area, in the small town of new manchester. it was a good life back in the 60's and 70's, but then i needed a job and had to relocate to northern virginia in the early 80's.

waterford park was a fairly nice place then, but it's grown into a powerhouse over the last few years.

I live in the northern panhandle. What did you want to know?

Mountaineer Racetrack is very nice. It's a great weekend getaway. I don't gamble but I'd love to stay there just for the spa and entertainment.

I live in Ohio now, but I was born and raised in Wheeling and go back home to visit my family every couple of months or so. We have the Wheeling Island casino, so I've never had occasion to go to the Mountaineer, though I have heard it is nice.

After a period of decline through the 90s, I think the central part of the panhandle is starting to bounce back a little bit, starting with the expansion of Wheeling Downs from just a dog track to a full fledged casino, then to the Highlands, and now with some manufacturing starting to come back into the McMechen/Moundsville area.
The quality of the schools in the northern panhandle is some of the highest in the state. And the ease of getting to either Pittsburgh or Columbus Ohio is another bonus.

Were it not for my hubby's job keeping us here in Ohio, I would move back to the northern panhandle in a heartbeat.
