Ok, how long ago did you move out of Wva, cause I disagree with you about unfriendly ppl. My husband, me and his dad just moved to Marland Hghts of Weirton and we love it here. The ppl are extreamly friendly, nice and caring. We only met with 2 rude ppl that is it.

maybe at the time it was like that but something is missing right there then cause when we drive around the area, or walk around, everyone even kids say hi, waves, nods, and everything. They even would say good morning how is your day going.

No one could ask me to move back to Pa. for one taxes a year is well over 1,500, here in Wva your yearly taxes is 500 can't beat that. I love country living and I would sleep outside if I could. We are looking into buying by next year into a nice home that I will call country living where homes are not so close together a bit further, nice spacious yard and a nice view of the woods or river.

Basically i learned alot of History about WV going to Fairmont State. I live in Northern VA and its amazing that 250 miles can completely take you out of civilization. WV is very bad as far as jobs and most live in north to work in Pittsburg. the winters suck specially in Elkins and Preston County. the state sign now even says OPEN FOR BUSINESS because it seriously needs some. Some of the nicest people live there but its definitely a trip back in ttime. My roommate lives in Hundred and you wouldnt believe it. A dollar General a small gas station and maybe 10 houses. Its crazy. Even fairmont being a city looks good from the outside but when you get in its run down, beat up, abandoned and not taken care of. Its definitely not a thriving state. Its one of the few states that has significantly declined in Population due to the problems with the coal mines. Thats another world in its own.

To each his own, but there are a lot of people who feel that civilization isn't defined by living in the shadow of Washington, D.C.

Sooo If you've learned so much about WV history at Fairmont State, which I went to my freshmen year and then transfered to Marshall because I thought it was a joke of a institution. But anyway, if you learned so much how is it that you didn't learn that the population of West Virginia has increased by over 10,000 people since 2000. Also North Central WV, as well as the eastern panhandle are also growing faster than the national growth average. True, there are many problems with the southern West Virginia coal fields, and southern West Virginia is suffering from population losses. Also, don't sit there and bit*h and whine about the winters in Elkins or Preston county if you've never lived in Elkins or Preston county. In Elkins, yea, it snows probably 10 times a year, with an accumulation of like an inch. The winters are usually nothing big or dramatic. You also mention how Fairmont looks run down and dingy. Hmm, to some maybe, but to others, its called HISTORICAL... Also, if you don't have anything nice to say in this forum, then you can keep your opinion to yourself. I'm sick and tired of snobs from other states thinking they are better and that their state is better. That is absurd, and I WILL NOT tolorate any negativity towards the state in which I reside in, not you.

its not called historical, the tallest building in Fairmont was plywood over alot of the windows, the streets are ruining and there is homeless people everywhere. I am not a snob, I loved it there as far as people go. You will never find people like that anywhere in this world. and i lived in Preston county for a few months back about 4 years ago, Its very very cold dreary winters. and as far as history. WV thrived in the 50s because of their coal mines, now that they are slowly collapsing the population has decreased, 10,000 may add to the current population but it still does not make up for what was lost. Its not about being nice its about being honest. There is ALOT of potential in fairmont/clarksburg/morgantown area. One day i really do hope it takes off. But as of now its got alot of economical problems to face. Your average surgeon out there makes 110,000 when the national average is 320. I know 110 will take you a long way there, but who would want to go there when they can make over a quarter of a million. They just need to play catch up thats all. And people like you i love, seriously thats another thing the people that COME from WV have so much pride in it. I have never seen more people wear WV attire or wave their flag more then you natives. You have good hearts and stand strong for what you believe, hence the reason your veteran count is higher than any other state. But the govt and economy is in a struggle

P.S. yeah fairmont was a pretty big joke before i went there...we are starting to get up there now. I have no intention of staying there for a degree but we are the third biggest campus, and we have about 9,000 kids now. about half of WVU. Although it is teh most expensive Public college now in WV....which sucks

My mother is in medicine, and surgeons make a lot more than 110,000. Maybe in their residency they make that, but any specialization of medicine will earn you at least 200,000 +, with Cardiology making the most. One of my mothers friends is an electro-phisio-cardiologist and he makes over 2 million a year, he was in school for close to 15 years though. So I can't see how a surgeon anywhere the United States could only make 110,000. But I go to Marshall now and I love it compared to Fairmont. Huntington is a great city, its open-mindedness, its culture, and Marshall is a wonderful institution, its 2nd in student size in the state with about 17,000 students. I stayed in Bryant Place dorms at Fairmont, and they're the biggest joke on the whole campus, way overpriced, but they force you to live there unless you want to live in a run down "project" style dorm.

thats just the average, there are spikes both high and low. and yeah 15 years will definitely get you good money. Im staying in bryant for a semester before i go to Alabama, i stayed in pence last year. Pretty crappy but it was fun if the people didnt go home on weekends

Right on Snorpus!!!

Now, not to offend but I must say;

I can tell ya about living in the shadow of Washington, well let me re-state and say I can tell ya about living in the shadow of, which is now part of Washington, aka as Martinsburg, West Virginia.

This was once a town that was a scene of Norman Rockwell, clean streets, nice folks, safe neighborhoods, etc., in other words civilization.
Next comes the Metro, and the train to Union to the District of Crimebia.

Move forward 20 years. Martinsburg is now a bedroom community of DC, with a county population of 100k, up from 25k previous.
Crime is now double the national average, homeless running a muk, drugs, and even drunkin vagrants completing the holiday season of peeing on the town square Christmas tree in broad daylight.
Downtown is depressed with dreary buildings, and Martinsburg High is puberty gangland.

With this said, to you Snor and Herd work hard to make sure you keep your locations the true, Wild and Wonderful West Virginia!!!! Granted, pride is free and there should be more in certain parts of the state, but all in all a few old buildings in Fairmont and bad weather in Elkins hardly qualifies as "leaving the civilized world" Go one block or so away from Constitution Ave in DC, travel to parts of SE DC, parts of Woodbridge, VA etc., and you can see the third world live and in action.

Sorry, but as a native and with 26 years of my life spent in West By God I have never seen folks shooting each other over dope, mugging little old ladies, carjacking, and showing overall animalized behavior as I did during my tenure in the Baltimore / DC area, and for that matter today in Atlanta which makes all of the above locations look like a peaceful Utopia!
