[quote=GottaHerdOn;1061240]My mother is in medicine, and surgeons make a lot more than 110,000. Maybe in their residency they make that, but any QUOTE]

The income in a residency is 45-50.000 a year which you get for 80 hours working week ( it was recently restricted to 80h, it was at least 100-110 hours a week)
MD's income in WV in many specialties is higher because of need, lower overhead, great start-up deals from hospitals.
110k a year in surgeons? only if he works 2-3 days a week. NYC internist could get it ( here is 170k minimum). The gap between average doctor's income here and East Coast is about 20-25%. Cost of living is much less- to maintain $200000 lifestyle of Charleston you need to make $480000 in NY, CT, NJ. Taxes are less here too. So, make your math.
but you right, to get such income you have to spend 4 y in college+4 in medschool+ 3-6y in residency. 11 y minimum ( the shortest residency- 3 years, all specialists must have training for at least 4 years.

i just wanted to say i agree with all of you, i grew up in fairmont, and i still live here. i chose to because i wanted to stay close to my family, and i grew my own. my husband is from nc, and he had a hard time adjusting to the unquie culture here.
I see people who have lived here thier entire lives, and others who have moved here for jobs in the bigger companies. i must say it is hard to live here, the job market sucks, and everything seems to be behind 30 years.
However, i can walk to what is in downtown.( the cofee shop seems to be the best.) and not worry about anything, i have left my car unlocked. We have a super walmart now (which sucks) and a few things are starting to build up.
if you go 20 miles north morgantown is there, wow there is a lot of difference. Morgantown is growing fast, and there is a lot there. THe city did a great job planning out the new construction there.
Fairmont is years behind. There is another downside, or upside depending on who you are. The population here seems to be elderly. The housing here is cheap and so are living expenses. There are a lot of younger couples moving into the small neighborhoods though.
My husband and i got a house very cheap, that once belonged to an elderly woman, we are in a neighborhood of older people. which is nice and quite, but with few people to talk to.
do not come here looking for a job. There are few to be found.

I love this state and is very sad to me what it has become, crime is up and sexaul abuse is absolutely rampant check the state police website, I grew up in wheeling and a middle class family, which doesnt exist anymore, you are either rich or poor period. the people here used to be friendly but not anymore, even in the mountains where we have owned property for decades and spent much time there in the summers (Tucker and Grant counties) the people are not nice anymore they look at you with suspicion and resentment. we have had abissmal leaders here for a long time and things just keep getting worse.
Your right on the money in everyway, i grew up here i know.

Uhh, You out of how many are living this American dream? I lived here all my life and when i was a kid it wasn't bad living here. Now i am looking to get out of this state. It's like this. If your poor and were raised in this state LIFE SUCKS if you have half a brain. The only ones i see happy are the "so called" hillbilly types or the ones (employers of all sorts) taking advantage of the poor ignorant hill jacks who think life is all about four wheelers and gas guzzling trucks which they can't afford (the gas or the truck or the four wheelers) and of course the educated folk who look with with a blind eye of the poverty and the ignorance all around them because THEY AREN'T AROUND THEM and they want to get mad when somebody points out some of the negatives of our state WHICH ARE PRETTY MUCH TRUE. And do you know who i see wanting to come to this state? The people who are already financially stable. I have seen some out of staters talk about how there so much to do and the locals just aren't doing anything when they could. Well lets see. First if you are traveling to our most precious gem you obviously have a descent income to travel abroad. The people i know are lucky if they can make it to the next county there so poor. You could reply well do something were your at. If you ever take a ride around and look at our beautiful scenery you will notice these yellow signs nailed to every 3 trees stating POSTED! PRIVATE PROPERY! NO HUNTING ALLOWED! That just gives a nice warm fuzzy friendly feeling inside doesn't it! The fact is unless you are financially stable or own property you can't do squat. Well you could go to your nearest town and watch all of three traffic lights change color but even then the city cops will run you off after your there to long. Or you could go fishing but in the **** ant town i live in Philippi. you would have better luck throwing your fishing line in the grass as to put it in the river. You have adults working in fast food places and gas stations to make ends meat and that is the MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE OF WV. Theres nothing wrong with doing any type of work but these people are raising families on this income, most have to do side jobs (lawn work, carpentry, etc) just to cover the bills. Why is it like this? A poor economy and a failed education system. This state doesn't want you to succeed they want you to cut there grass for them while there enjoying our precious gem of a state. And the people who work here (and im talking about the ones who never went to college like me) get treated like ****,your disposable,we can replace you attitude because they can. I have worked out of state for the same company and it was like night and day because there you are a rare commodity. They appreciate you more because most West Virginians are good people and are hard workers. The only reason i came back is because i have a daughter here but now i think i would have been better off to stay in Ohio. I am not saying that other states are better in anyway, take ohio for example. The work enviroment to me was great but to drive on the interstate with road ragers or go shopping and deal with *******s were a negative but YOU CAN MAKE A LIVING unlike WV. The only way you will get ahead in West Virginia is a college education of some sort that you KNOW you can get a job doing or Blue collar (and there are not very many descent paying jobs forthis in this state) work like working in the mines IF YOU CAN GET IN and IF YOUR ABLE TO DO THIS TYPE OF WORK or be content with nothing. Thats just how it is.

I think WV is perfect for a lot of small businesses. Tourism, of course, is a great, renewable resource, but I find that there is little to induce tourism. Historic sites, for instance. I looked for books on West Virginia historic architecture, there isn't a SINGLE ONE I could find published. Organic farming is just made for WV. Why does Kentucky have the edge on whiskey production? There are only 2 WV distilleries that I know of, it's totally ridiculous. Small businesses are actually the backbone of the US. There is so much potential in small business in WV.

Freenot: What you are saying saying is this...the level of income a person attains and enjoys is tied to the level of education that he/she has...That's been the case for several centuries...go back to school and get a new perspective. This is the way it's done.

Bobilee: Western Virginia, in 1790, was the center of a great whiskey trade. Taxation drove those farmers to Kentucky. 'Whiskey Rebellion' ....
Tourism? The money is generated from the gambling industry and most is spent back to advertise the gambling industry...you should see the DC papers advertising WV.
Organic? Those tomatoes were grown in several WV hydroponic farms....takes free gas to do it right.
It's getting better...I agree about a book on historic architecture and would help put one together...if it was a coffee table book, it would have to be printed in China...about $20 per copy + shipping. There is an overload of subject matter in WV....almost too much. Pictorial History...A grant might be out there to do this...about $50k.

Hi David. My dad had a few acres in KY with a friend, and a small patch about 400 sq. feet near his house, and he grew the best naturally grown tomatoes I've ever had, almost as thick and juicy as steaks, we had them for breakfast with biscuits and gravy. There is no reason why WV shouldn't be a center for Whole Foods-style agriculture. I would love to be able to buy Isaiah Morgan whiskey up here in Philly, but everything is in State stores here, and it's all KY whiskey. As for tourism, I don't think anything has been done on historic tourism in the state. What a great thing to have a steamboat cruise from Wheeling to Parkersburg to Pt. Pleasant, down to Huntington, to lay over several days for tours of historic houses like Green Bottom Plantation and McCausland's farm "Grape Hill" in Mason Co. And the Kanawha Valley, there are so many possibilities, and you don't have to blow the tops off mountains to generate the income. The state need to fund publications and visual presentations, public relations is half the battle. Why is KY in the top 10 tourist destinations in the US, when WV has much of the same commodity? Because KY does a great job in self-promotion, the KY Derby, horse farms, whiskey & juleps. People buy into the fantasy, and WV has it's own identity and fantasy to promote, but the state does nothing. Gambling is a hell of a way to generate income. We are facing that here in Philly, they want to put in casinos along the Delaware river, and people are not happy about it. I must admit that over the years I have relented in my outlook on a number of the traditional vices, but I still have an abhorrence of gambling.
