Sadly, Bridgeport is becoming a Yuppie wonderland...Shinnston will be next to lose its personality... Bridgeport reminds me of Germantown...home schooling is the answer but the kids need the social and sports programs, so what do you do?....
home must be strong to combat the crap...good for you, 3 Run...making moral demands now will protect them now and later...

O.k. So the schools do not sound as great as I have been told. I don't want to send my child to a school where she will be eaten alive by snobby kids. She is very outgoing and extremely confident and I don't want to break her spirit. Does anyone have suggestions of better areas near Bridgeport? Everyone has suggested that I move to Bridgeport but the schools are starting to concern me. I have heard of Taylor county and was told that the elementary school there was ok but the high school was not. When I looked the high school up there was a high drop out rate for that county. What about the Fairmont area?

Thanks,
hatnic

just my .02, but I guess moving always means losing all the love and respect that you have at your present school, and havng to start from zero. What you did before doesn't count.
I can only say that east Fairmont seems to have nice friendly people, and I hear nothing bad About EF high school. But, I am totally unqualified to say what that school actually is like. Good luck, i hope some others can help.

Last spring I went to Grafton HS to talk to some of the students on how to prepare a business plan, read and interpret a financial statement- things like that. I was impressed with the school, and impressed with the students I met with. They were genuine, down to earth and really great kids. They won the competition for their region.

I wouldn't be alarmed by drop out rates, and I certainly wouldn't put stock in the test scores either (knowing what I know now). I would send my kids to Taylor County schools or Lewis County schools in a heartbeat. I don't think I would go to Clarksburg schools, but in the rural areas I wouldn't mind a bit.

Like I said- Bridgeport is not 'bad', but as David said it is a bit yuppie-ish. It's just not a place for a man with a diesel truck and a bluetick coonhound.

I was raised in Harrison Co ,wont say just where so as not to offend anyone, but it wasnt Bridgeport. The times I would go to Bridgeport just running around and all, I knew I was outclassed and I always got the feeling that Bport was the "land of the yuppies". I dont say that to hold anything against anyone just to make a point. Bein a yuppie is fine if that is how you are raised. I was raised on a farm and we did without ALOT but we did have fine food and clean clothes and church on Sunday. To me, Bp was a world away from our lifestyle. Farm life isnt anything like what they enjoyed.....to me....they live a life like 90210. Go valley girls!!!!!!!!!!!

New kids in town are popular...give it a try and let your children have a little input...There's a lot of money in town...the Mom's and Dad's make a ton of it...the kids have the dribble downs...but the best of the parents teach responsibility and get them jobs after school and teach respect...those items are accross the board in any social situation...Me? I think its a plus...these Mom's and Dad's are coming here with Master Degrees and are changing Wv for the better...their kids will too...many of them will change the area and take jobs here...something that we prevented our own children from doing...a great regret.

I guess what I am trying to figure out about the schools in Bridgeport is one are they good and two have all of these kids grown up together. I know that there are clicks everywhere you go but when I was young I was transferred to a private school where everyone had known each other since birth and were not welcoming to newcomers. Up until now I have heard nothing but great things about the schools but the spoiled kid thing took me back a little. I knew after looking at the cost of homes in the Bridgeport area that there was big money being made. The cost of homes here are close to 100-200,000 dollars cheaper for the same exact home. I really enjoyed the area while I was there visiting. Does anyone know anything about the Crystal Ridge subdivision that is being developed?

Thanks,
hatnic

The local people have moved out of town to the peace and quiet they had several years before...a customer yesterday called it a wasteland...In his opinion, he was right...after all, he had 65 acres of land overlooking Arden...which is a literal Eden for us...he will build a storybook house for his wife...one that really exists in dreams..and he has 65 acres to isolate himself on...

As a wasteland, the urban areas areas are being given up to the new migration...the California look in Charlespoint or the nail-jobs on Rt 50...It's all packaged now and I'm glad that I can be selective...that's the last remaining virtue for a builder...that he can say no...go find someone else...As close as I want to come to the urban areas is Taylor county...laid back and taking it all...

As for all the kids growning up together...Yes, they did but in different places...about 60% are new to the area...at least the past 5 years...
Where they have grown up together is Shinnston/Lincoln...Fairmont/East and West Side...Morgantown/ University High...RCByrd is new...to new for the area to get a feel and develop deep loyalty...

I know a family who lives on the east side of Clarksburg and transports little Janie to Buckhannon/Upshur every morning...after next year..she will graduate...
next year she gets a car and can drive herself...good luck...not everything is perfect in 'almost heaven....

My wife is coming back from the Clarkesburg area tonite on a redeye. She's ready to pull up stakes and move back there. It's home for her. I know that tone in her voice and she ain't dinkin' about neither. I'm a desert rat all my life with sand and sage fer breakfast lunch and dinner for the 43 years I been alive and I'm not without my apprehension bout movin'. But, I have to say, the one thing that doesn't concern me, bout livin' in the Clarkesburg area is a drug subculture ensnaring my young son. To much "kin" lookin' out for him for one and him being ranch born and bred he's tough and principled for another. The low lifes in the area, from what I've experienced, keep shut of being dragged into the daylight and fight shy of tough and principled people. They don't have the stomach for it. I'm both exited and apprehensive about a potential move there but my apprehension revoles more around leaving the ground I've spilled blood into my whole life than concerns about the scavenger fringe of society. ( We live on my family ranch that I got from my Dad when he passed, and It's hard to leave whats in this patch of sky) But the folks around Clarksburg that I've interacted with, whether related to my wife or folks I met at the fishin' hole, were the type of people that got yer back ifn' you'd be willin' to do the same. West Virginia is a FINE place and Clarksburg and it's surounding areas are no exeption to that. Good guys win --bad guys lose.

Crystal Ridge is Dan Ryan Homes.

STAY FAR AWAY

Your better off in an older home. I dealt with Dan Ryan in the EP and his homes are crap boxes.
