30 minutes outside of Charleston will include pretty much anything between Charleston and Huntington as the 2 are only about 35 minutes apart when there's no traffic. Huntington has some very nice areas, Barboursville is a quaint little town, Milton is home to Blenko Glass, Hurricane has a lot of nice homes as does Teays Valley, Cross Lanes has some nice areas and South Charleston has some good areas too. Do some research on some of these places and see what suits your needs. Hurricane and Teays Valley offer the convenience of being right between Huntington and Charleston and those places are really growing up. But to do most of your major shopping and activities, you have to go to Huntington or Charleston. They have a nice new school there with a lot of neat technologies. In Cabell County (Huntington area), nearly all of the schools are now new with plans to build the last few to make them all new. If gas is an issue, they've also just started bus service between Huntington and Charleston that stops in a few different places in between and it is $8 or less round trip depending on where you board. If you would like more info on any of the cities listed above, just ask and I'm sure people will be more than happy to tell you what you want to know. Hope this helps.
Tim

Thanks for the replies everyone, it seems like the areas we have been looking at online are ok. I do have a question or two though. In Ohio we had to pass school levys, in Pa they just raise the taxes. What does WV do? The houses we are looking at online have no basements, is this how all homes are in WV?

Thank you
Bob

WV passes levies at the county level that last a certain amount of time in order to help fund new schools. In terms of basements in houses, there's a good mix of houses with and without basements in the state. Basements are nice but if you don't have one, you never have to worry about the moisture/flooding that can happen with the spring and fall rains if there isn't good drainage around the house.

Bob realtors this past spring were telling me the best school district performance was happening in south charleston, and it's a more expensive suburban neighborhood but still economical relative to most of the country. I don't know if they were citing old data or if it was marketing pitch so check for yourself at this web page- exemplary schools 08. West Virginia Office of Education Performance Audits (OEPA) | Charleston, W.Va. | A West Virginia Department of Education Agency

Arizona I know sissonville road properties in north charleston were very rough which may be what you mistook as her reference. Haven't been to Sissonville proper yet to know anything about it but the city-data statistics site looks pretty nice.

My wife is in the banking industry and will be in charge of WV, SE OH and a area actually around Hubbard. A majority of her time will be spent in WV though and if we want to see her at night we think being based in Charleston area would be best.

Thanks
Bob

Good area and good schools - Teays Valley in Putnam County (however the drive to/from Chas at rush hour can be quite a challenge).

South Hills in Chas is a good area with good schools.
