Default If looking for job in WV, read opportunities

There is a shortage of workers in the construction industry and looks like in the coal industry also. Read below for info on workers needed in coal and others.

People whine about no jobs in WV. I think the issue is that there are a lot of unfulfilled positions in WV however they involve hard work, often long hours, physical work, etc. These are high paying jobs, well, I guess they are considered high paying if you consider 50+K a year high paying, which I do.

"But I have a college education" -- often employers in fields you would not consider are looking for college educated people. In the heavy construction field, many employers are looking for employees with a college degree to work as superintendents, etc. because they need people who can communicate with their customers, etc.

My parents and many people my age went to work in the plants, etc. - it was physical but high paying work. So many grads today want a physically cushy job and whine that there are no jobs available. I say "Buckle up you whimp and make America proud. Where is the rough and tough spirit of our forefathers which made America a powerhouse?".

Here is the info about jobs:

"the state's unemployment rate in July was 4.2 percent. That's considered by some economists to be close to full employment. The rate is due in part to the fact that the state's energy sectors -- coal mining and natural gas exploration and production -- are enjoying a boom. .........

It's a big turnaround from past years when chemical plants were cutting back and it seemed that health care and tourism were the only vibrant sectors of the economy .......

Walker seeks technicians with diagnostic skills in one or more of the following areas: hydraulic, diesel engine, electronics and transmission. "If we are lucky enough to find a person with one of those skills, we'll take them and build on the other three," he said..........

Kureha Corp., which is building a $100 million specialty plastics plant in Belle, ........." http://dailymail.com/Business/200809100160

" In July, the nation's unemployment rate hit 5.7 percent. In West Virginia, unemployment stood at 4.5 percent.

The state's manufacturing base is growing and the coal industry is running out of workers............

Massey Energy just announced a major, $950 million expansion to increase its production by 25 percent in the next two years.

It held a jobs fair in Boone County, seeking engineers, maintenance supervisors, production foremen, electricians, mine operators, roof bolt operators, shuttle car operators, scoop operators, beltmen, fire bosses and move crews for underground operations.
These are skilled occupations that pay well and have great benefits. The average pay for a mine employee last year was $60,000 - not including overtime."
http://dailymail.com/Opinion/Editorials/200809120147

"A South Charleston call center is expanding, adding about 200 new jobs and spending $250,000 on its operations center. .......... The hiring began in July, and continues through the fourth quarter, with positions starting at $10.50 per hour" Charleston Daily Mail - Kanawha County - S.C. call center expanding, adding about 200 new jobs*

With good political leadership, and a bit of luck, things could very well be looking up for West Virginia.

If you consider new energy sources, just about no matter which way things go, WV comes out ahead. Coal, gasified coal, natural gas, and wind are all favorable for WV. Nuclear doesn't help, but Pittsburgh should be a focus for that, and it's only an hour away. About the only new energy source where WV doesn't come out ahead is solar, and who knows, all that sand that brought the glass industry in could be turned into photovoltaic cells.

Now consider demographics. We baby boomers are nearing retirement age. I suspect a lot of us just changed our minds about retiring anywhere from Florida to Texas. I hate to think what insurance rates are going to do all around the Gulf. WV has reasonable housing costs, low property taxes, and if you pick your location right, a pretty reasonable four-season climate. And you can always visit Florida in the winter, when it's actually habitable (in most places ).

Government standards consider 2.8% to be full employment...Morgantown stands at 2.5%.

The 500 million dollar frieght center that Chessie System wanted to build in Farimont, Wv will be built in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Benedum Airport, Bridgeport, WV will soon be a U.S. Customs Port of Entry...Chinese and other foriegn materials needed for the gasification programs can/will be delivered into North Central Wv without any interference.

With a bunch of students and 3000 physicians with wives/husbands that are homemakers. Morgantown is literally recession-proof.

Well its now the liberal way to have lots of kids to catch up with that never ending rain cloud of conservative propaganda that has slowly crept into the mainstream America since the joy years of Reaganism. ha ha

But those families with their 3-4-5+ kids are WV's saving grace. We need children here to help our state "not be the oldest" state in the country. Companies don't want to start or relocate here if we're all geriatrics...

Check the starting salaries for teachers, for example.
