kanawha cty networking
Ooopsie, can't edit a heading. It should read kanawha county networking, not to be confused with kanawha city.
Ran across a few handy sites at yahoo that I thought I'd share.
"Kanawhacafe" group is a casual blog convo about local events and issues- problem solving, people selling a fridge, where do I find whatnots. Handy for new comers to charleston like myself unfamiliar with WV's system of things. Something of a free style bulletin board for lost pets, the latest school policies, where the good sales are happening, recipies- whatever you'd want to post really. Even small business cards are OK (avon, tupperware, someone selling vacuum cleaners etc). The only real restriction is keep it family style so it won't embarrass someones grandmother. It also appears to be a politics free zone if that's something getting on your nerves.
Another is a sister group called freecycle. Cleaning out your garage or getting rid of your fat lady clothes because you lost weight? Cousin is broke and needs maternity clothes? Upgraded your appliances and the old needs a new home? Even if it's only worthy of scrap, post it as such. Keep it out of the landfill, post it there as an offer or a wanted ad, people who can use it will send emails willing to take it off your hands with minimal effort from you. I offered free plants and got 24 responses to my offer. Less work for me to dig up- half the job is done for free labor in 2 days. Also found someone needing to get rid of garden rocks- took that off their hands for free today, and my landscaping plans will happen at a significantly lower cost. Works out nice for all parties involved. People getting rid of baby clothes or in need of them can hook up there. Pack rats who can't be bothered with a garage sale... here's your chance to be clutter free. One of the ladies who came to my house told me how she had to clear out a relatives house who had passed away- it would have taken her a year, but free cycle helped her empty it out in 3 months.
If you'd rather not have interactions with strangers at your door and would still like to recycle things, you can donate your old bathroom sink or back door (like I did) or the fireplace parts (like I bought) at habitat for humanity's "REstore" over by young street and piedmont. Nearby references- fergusons electric, greybar, fazio's italian food, across the bridge from bigley ave foodland, WV american water plant if that gives you a better idea where they are in charleston. All profits go back into keeping charleston area livable for all. Landlords shop there regularly I noticed. Donations are also tax deductible so your accountant will thank you if you've worked too much overtime this year. Who thinks of these things during christmas season?
Online (not just WV), anyone interested in listening to free alternative or indie music that isn't available on the regular radio- jango.com is an internet based radio station where people share their personal collections in many genre's. Yes, country music is also a genre available, including top 40, but even better are some old timers they don't play anymore. Jazz/blues category I found rare takes of coltrane I'd never be able to own.
Found some great bands I wouldn't have ordinarily been exposed to and it's all free/ no risk (unlike buying a CD for one song and hating the album). My current fave finds are manitoba "skunks" (instrumental), sufjan stevens- a very talented folks singer "casimir pulaski day" (I think he gets no air play because he's gay) and a techno/electronica sound from tet four & a german band I can't recall the name. I miss my old radio station in NYC but found many artists available at this site. Iron and wine I've been a fan for years, and there they are! Incredible talents that won't ever be commerical enough for top 40.
