Default Grade too full in Bridgeport school

Our family is transfering to Bridgeport and I have called both elementary schools in Bridgeport to check on the dress code and to find out what information I will need to transfer my daughter. To my surprise Simpson was full for the particular grade that my daughter will be transfering into. I have never heard of a public school being too full to accept the students in their area. The woman I spoke to told me to call Johnson and if they were too full then she would probably go to Norwood. O.k. I am not understanding the concept of transfering a child from school to school. As the woman insulted the area that I am from she explained that in Wv they don't just put 35 students to a classroom. Which I understand and that is not how we do things down in the "backwoods" as I am thinking she thought. Our schools do not turn away students, they will build more schools or add more classrooms as needed. We do not generally have more than 20-21 in a classroom. Then she went on to explain that my daughter would be transfered back to Simpson if someone left for another school. So now I am thinking my child will be sent to one school where she will have to adjust and then could be plucked up and sent to a different school to make new friends again. Can someone please explain this insanity to me? Did I understand her correctly or was this a total misunderstanding? Had I known this before hand I would not have agreed to transfer my child into a situation like this. My next question is how does the kindergarten registration work? I have two other children and I do not want them at two or three different schools. I did contact St. Mary's and they were super nice and very informative, but I did not choose to move to Bridgeport, wv to end up at a private school trying to afford tuition. I cannot believe that I may have to send my child to private school because of the public school being too full. Who would I contact to get a clarify this? Sorry so long, just in shock at what I have been told.

Thanks,
hatnic

I'm sorry to hear about this situation hatnic. Did this person work for the Harrison County School Board that you spoke with?

I've never heard of a school turning away students before either. That's crazy.

Call the school board, this is crazy. If the school in your dist. is too full, they should have to transport the student to the other school and let the child at least finish out the yr in the same school. Call the school board!

I am going to call the school board. I have not moved yet, thank goodness, but I am a little worried about moving into an area where my child may or may not have a place to go. Has anybody heard of this policy before?

Thanks,
hatnic

What's so hard to understand about a school (or a specific grade level at a school) being full?

There are only so many classrooms, and each room has a capacity. They can't just magically create a new classroom, especially if room is available at another school in the district.

Will they have a bus to the school that she will be going too? Will all the other children in the area being getting on a different bus to go to a different school than your daughter?

This does not sound right, that is why they have jurisdiction maps on where the kids live to what school they will attend. Call the school board, not the school.

My sons school has 9 5th grade classes.

I am sorry that you cannot understand why I would have a problem with this situation but I have never heard of a public school turning away a student that is zoned for their school. Usually when a school is built it is made to accomodate the amount of homes and people in its area. Most people with children purchase homes in certain areas so that their kids may go to the school that the parents choose for them. I am sorry if you have become offended by the fact that I have never heard of this and think it is ridiculous for children to be moved from school to school as needed for the school. I am obviously not from the area but this is the first I have ever heard of this in any area.

Thanks,
hatnic

Janipoo, to my understanding she would not have a bus in her area if we moved into the Simpson school zone and she were sent to Johnson or Norwood. I am glad to see that someone else does not think this sounds right. I am going to call the school board tomorrow and find out for sure. We were looking at several homes in the Simpson school area but now will have to look elsewhere.

Thanks,
hatnic

My understanding that all West Virginia public school children ride a bus, even if the school is right across the street. I am pretty sure it is not just Berkeley County.

I bet someone gave you the wrong information, because if that was the case than anyone can send their kids to any school they choose.

Here is the website for Harrison County Schools:
