Well, I'll keep my shotgun by my side but I will unload it for now.
By-the-by in case you have not heard, something I am chuckling about - parts of NE Ohio - counties of Trumbull, Mahoning (Youngstown) and Ashtabula - have just been legally declared part of Appalachia. Warn your friends in NYC - we'll be after them soon.

AS part of Appalichia, these Ohio counties will be elligible for special federal road building moneys...call it an extension of 'Corridor X,Y,Z...under Homeland Security, part of the evacuation avenue to and from Canada as/if the need arises...The catch is 'Legally Declaired...everything in Government has to do with spending money...
If the big war happens...Canada and the USA will close ranks...we will see a government of 'Martial Law..similar to early 1920/30 Germany...

How about having a non descript place in the Appalachians, not just in West Virginia? There are lots of depressed mining towns in Pennsylvania too...
My family is originally from Windber, PA (a little bit of trivia about Windber: it's actually the Berwind Coal Company with the syllables switched!). Just an Idea.
Both of my grandfathers were immigrants from Poland and worked in the Berwind mines and raised their kids in the Mine Company's subsidized housing. Sadly, I never new either of my grandfathers... they died very young.

7th, I'm beginning to lean in that direction. I think perhaps focusing on West Virginia is the wrong approach. The Appalachians run a loooong way and the coal mines do too. I can probably find a spot in East Tennessee for that matter and take my photos there. Otherwise Pennsylvania sounds great too if you think you could find some pics there.
Like you suggested, I guess I can leave out the state name in the story altogether to prevent any "hurt feelings" in this sensitive climate of today. It's simply not necessary.

I thought Cartoons were going the way of the dinosaurs...like the other out-dated media...Newspapers..Magazines...
people are not able to read and write...and cartoons have less meaning when the expression is reduced to only a form of a spoken word....sorry...
Is this your only job? What is your day job?

Go to Sutton. Take a picture of the damn and the lake.
Make a cartoon of a little barefoot boy fishing and hoping to get a bite on his line while not realizing a fish is nibbling on his toe in the water.
You provide the caption.
Go into the rundown part of town and have Grandpa explain about how things used to be when he was young and shooting pool and spitting tobaccy in the coffee cans set around the floor and never missed a pool shot or the coffee can.
Go to Canfield and show the boy feeding a young colt in a snowstorm.
Show the little boy giving a tired, dirty coal miner a drink of water when he comes out of the mine.
Use your imagination, use the history and the down home simple lifestyle of W.Va in times gone by.
Or even present times.
You can make your cartoons funny or human interest.
W.Va provides a wealth of both.

Incredible hardship of those workers and their families...perhaps our classification and redirection towards a more social correctness is merited...
We get so caught up into our own private existences that we forget we have roots and a harder more determined generation/s paved a way for our level of living and success.
