What about Princeton? I have been doing a little research and find it might be a nice small town to retire in? Any ideas from anyone?

Personally, I used to think that Weirton, in the northern panhandle was one of the best cities in West Virginia. Even though there was subtle racism, people tended to respect each other, their properties, and the way that the town actually looked. Now when you ride through some of the areas, with the steel mill being a horrific mess, which once was the livelihood of most of the residents of the town, you find that people are rude, and only worry about themselves. They still ride through the neighborhoods, and tear up the streets, workmen come and mark up the streets, pretending they will be back on "Tuesday" to fix the problem, no way, they must mean during infinity time. It is totally different now. Things are not the same. Change was inevitable, but this is just ridiculous. Talk about , What is the Best City in West Virginia? It is not Weirton, West Virginia, unless you want to come in to town and help some of the concerned citizens, do something to make this city better. For anyone thinking or contemplating moving here, drive here first, stay a week, look around, and then see if this is where you want to be. You can make a decision that will affect you and your family in a good way or in a bad way. Take my advice, Stay awhile, keep your bags packed. Bet you leave in a week, never to return or wait a couple of years, check out the properties of everyone, and decide of this is what you want. My bet is , YOU WILL TAKE THE MIDNIGHT TRAIN TO GEORGIA, or THE CHATTANOOGA CHOO CHOO. OUT OF HERE. (Smile) Just kidding, DRIVE YOUR CAR. THEN YOU CAN SEE IT ALL.

Why are you ignoring the eastern panhandle. I own a house in tucker county- a ski house that is. A great place to vacation and relax but no nightlife, restuarants or activity. Shepherdstown is between charlestown and martinsburg. A local university in town and some great resturants . Not far from northern va. and dc.
Medical facilities are better than average and far better than rural west. va. A diamond in the rough. tom c |

Why the high rate of assault in Charleston? I noticed in the crime stats that many cities in WV and elsewhere seem to get most of their crime in the form of thefts and burglaries, rather than robbery and violent crime. That might indicate to me, a lot of drugs and high unemployment. Or maybe just a lot of lowlife dirtbags. Anyhow, Charleston is unusual because it shows an unusually high rate of violent crime. The rate of assault, is about twice the rate of Los Angeles, fer cryinoutloud!!! Does anyone know what's up with that?
