Tbailey, i was talking to my brother the other night, he lives in Huntington as well. He was talking about how vibrant Huntington's downtown has been lately. The Pullman Plaza is beginning to rub off on surrounding buildings and blocks, as Huntington's downtown is slowly turning things around.

CT, i enjoy reading your posts, very insightful.

Thanks, Silk. It is good to hear that they are fixing up some of Huntington's downtown buildings. Maybe the new demand for coal will spin off some more benefits for the region.

In general, downtown shopping plazas are on the way out. They have a hard time competing with suburban shopping locations due to traffic congestion and parking considerations. As you know, the Charleston downtown shopping mall has seen better days. The fact that Huntington's is doing well is good news.

Large shopping malls in general are what's on the way out. Lifestyle Centers/open air shopping centers like Pullman Square are what things are headed toward. Thankfully, Huntington has a successful lifestyle center as well as a successful mall.

Yes, the trend is going from large indoor type malls back to strip type malls. Actually, it is hard to understand except that the latter would cost less to maintain, heat, etc. Pullman's success is great, but it bucks the trend. I have seen only a very few similar endeavors have great success... the one in Monterey, CA that uses a former fishery/cannery comes to mind, but it is tough due to parking and traffic concerns. Maybe the fact that Huntington does not have those issues lends itself to such a project?

They have done a great job making sure there is parking down there. There were 2 existing parking garages close by and they built 2 more as part of Pullman. They should have built them bigger though because they are often full, especially on weekends with the special events that go on. They also redid a lot of the parking on 3rd Avenue to make it angled and allow for more spaces. There is lots of traffic down there but thankfully Huntington has the infrastructure to get them in and out pretty quickly thanks to 3rd Ave being 3-4 lanes one way in and 5th Ave being 3-4 lanes one way out with 4th ave to handle 2 way traffic.

They are doing great things down there right now. I can't wait to see it next year after many of the current projects are done and I really can't wait to see downtown in about 5 years. It'll be something great to see.
