Wow. If I didn't know better I'd think that first picture was taken on Route 2 just outside of Huntington. The hills here are much more rolling and the trees turn just like that in the fall. Huntington also has very mild winter weather and gets even less snow than Charleston. If you want to move to WV and are looking for something similar to that first pic, Huntington will definately meet your needs. Here's a link to the Huntington pics on city-data http://www.city-data.com/album/album...-Virginia.html

And here's a pic that kind of shows the rolling hills around Huntington.

I think they do look alike, but W. Virginia is more hills. It is prettier than IA. I will look up Huntington-thanks so much everybody on this thread!

I found it off a tourism website. I have been to the driftless region before and visited La Crosse, Galena, and Prairie du Chien.

There's actually only one picture of Iowa in that bunch (the one of the funicular tracks, in DuBuque.) All the rest were in Illinois and Wisconsin. The ones in Illinois were in Jo Daviess County, which borders Iowa. I used them as stand-ins because a) they were easier to find, and b) they are all part of the same Driftless Region as is found in NE Iowa.

Here is an illustration of where the Driftless Region is:

Here's a couple more pics of the Driftless Region for good measure:

Really? You are lucky! I hope you thought it was beauitful. I'm from a small town not so far from La Crosse, Prairie du Chien etc, in Iowa. I love the midwest (okay, this isn't the right forum for that) but am sick of the weather, and find W. Virginia very beautiful- also, (open question to anyone) how warm is West V in comparison to Iowa?

How warm is 'Tornado Free, Wind Free, West Virginia...by the time those Rocky Mountain winds get to us they are swept upward into Canada or over to the Northeast..

Warmer in Wv...with the exception of the higher elevations...2000 ft or more...Ohio River running the entire Northern Border keeps a mildness in that region...EP with its semi arid desert quality keeps a dry cold in the winter...winter harshness is in the lower mid-eastern part of the state which is entirely mountains...
temps? Depend on the jet stream flow...if into Canada and the Great Lakes, as has been the norm for the past 30 years...very mild...
Where we call winter locally is the Pennsi state line...seems like the barrier to the real winter lies on that line...

Most eastern states will feel "milder" in the winter because the winds don't blow all the time compared with the Plains/Midwest. 20F feels quite pleasant with no wind

What are the temps in Iowa?
Our temps vary by "where" in WV. The hottest in summer/warmest in winter is the Charleston/Huntington area.

The picture you posted is similar to the areas of WV closest to the Ohio River. From there, it changes a lot. In Southern WV, sooooo many of the mountains are very very steep (as in straight up and down). The ski areas (about 3-5 hours from Southern WV) have the highest elevations. (Keep in mind, our mountains are not like the Rockies or those in Vermont).
