Ever heard that West Virginia looks N. East Iowa?
Ever heard that West Virginia looks like NE Iowa? I have, from people who have been to both and looking at pictures online find this to be very true- should post some. The bluffs and fields look very alike to NE Iowa and the landscape in general as well. I have heard this many times, so wonder if anyone in W. Virginia has ever heard that? North East Iowa is the part of Iowa by the Miss. bordering MN and Wis and Illinois. At first you might think Iowa and W. Virginia look alike? But they do look alike. I'm looking for another place to move someday, and also, any stories of midwestern people moving to W. Virginia would be welcome. I find the landscape being so familiar homelike, but know almost nothing else about West Virginia (except its warmer than IA!)

Very interesting. I had never heard that before. Please do post some pictures so those of us who haven't been to NE Iowa can see the similarities. Thanks for posting.

Warmer than Iowa? Don't head for our mountains where the ski areas are - often 20 degrees colder than Charleston, WV area.

I'm not very good at posting pictures so thanks beyond thanks to the person who did. Now, someone should post photos of W. Virginia.

That's dead on! Where did you find that? Its what I am looking out at from my window right now. Photos in the summer might look like W. Virginia more. What does autumn in W. Virginia look like? Thanks so much for posting this- very helpful. I like NH too by the way.

Given this is in the higher elevations of Randolph County. Maybe only 50 miles from the highest point in the state. I doubt there are mountains or hills like this in Iowa, but it may have similarities???

Eh -- not particularly close. I have lived both just outside of West Virginia (in Pittsburgh -- same basic terrain) and 15 miles outside the Driftless Region (in Madison WI) that NE Iowa is a part of. The Driftless Region is a patch of land that was not glaciated during the last ice age, located in NE Iowa, SE Minnesota, the extreme NW corner of IL, and much of western Wisconsin. The hills of the Driftless Region are baby humps compared to WV.
Here are some pictures from the Driftless Region:
Crawford County WI:
Unknown location in the Driftless Region:
Galena IL, in Jo Daviess County:

Vernon County WI
Devil's Lake, 30mi NW of Madison WI
Wollersheim Winery vineyard, Sauk Prairie region, 20mi NW of Madison WI

Very nice pictures of Iowa. They finish a respectable 2nd to WV.
