I have heard farmer's markets have really taken off in the last 5-10 years. We have a very good farmer's market here in the Merrimack Valley region of New Hampshire during the growing season. It helps out the local farmers, is good for meeting new people/socializing, and stimulates the local economy.

I don't disagree that we could do much better with this than we currently do, but when one breaks down the data, Huntington is getting a bad rap. Cabell County (where Huntington is) is at or better than the national average on many of the categories that were looked at. It's when you throw the surrounding counties from OH and KY into the mix to make the MSA that the stats begin to look hideous. But since Huntington is the main city in the MSA, it gets all of the criticism. Here's an exerpt from one of the articles speaking about this rating:
“Cabell's stats (the study doesn't break down to city level unless the city is a whole Metropolitan Statistical Area) are significantly better than those listed by AP as applying to Huntington. For example, Cabell County actually is better than the national average when it comes to sedentary lifestyles; it's also well under the figures AP reports for Huntington for obesity, diabetes, and heart disease as well (since AP assigns the whole region's figures to Huntington). His stats didn't include the toothlessness one, but doctors I talked to thought it was way out of line for Huntington.”

I live in NC now and our newspaper printed this article, along with a very unfavorable picture of Huntington...........the article and picture took up half a page........I was personally shocked at the negative take on the article..........it was almost as if it was one more "out to get WV" article.

People who know some of those interviewed have said that the author of the article only would ask them negative questions and everything had a negative slant. They also said that he wanted nothing to do with anything positive. It sounds as if he had the tone of the article planned before he even arrived to "research" the article. What a shame.

Yea, bet there wasn't an article in your paper showing that WV currently has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation, that our real estate is bucking the national trend and is up 7%, etc.

Here's one of the funniest things.....
Also....
but for some reason they chose to pick on Huntington and the Huntington Area in their article is actually the Metro area which includes Ky and Ohio.

When Charlotte Pritt almost won the governor's chair and beat Joe Manchin soundly in the Primaries here in Wv...a closing of the Ranks was seen. The politico's saw that as a warning...they almost lost their power to an honest worker would have championed the peoples rights...Much like todays, Sara Palin...
We are seeing that 'Closing of Ranks on a national scale...Wv is owned by liberal Dems and they vote that line in the electorial college...I feel they would have voted Obama even if McCain had Won...they are that party oriented...
Wv is/has been a 'whipping boy since the days of 'Lil Abner...I've seen the hovels in present day Louisana and Mississippi...and we have that too...but we are being punished for voting McCain and will see more of this...These are not News Articles...they are only Opinion Editorials...Op Ed pieces nothing more...opinions...

I love to see news like this. By all means, bring it on, tell the world we are fat, toothless, devoid of health care or knowledge. Perfect. Playing right into my long-term plans to be left alone by meddling other states. We've done pretty darned well on granny's recipe in the woods and i intend to continue that path. everyone knows the grannies, most never had kids
