Wv going 'GREEN..its been there for years!
As a builder I'm always looking at innovation in housing..when we travel, I'm always taking photos of good ideas elsewhere to use here with our work.
I'm intrigued with the 'New Age Ideas of 'Building Green...In a web search this evening, I was so surprised that the NEW homes of tomorrow look exactly like so many of the old shacks I've seen in Webster County and other areas...
Old, dilapated, hanging on the sides of the mountain with chains and cables...
I'm perplexed... Junk is not eco-friendly...and how about health issues?
Do these homes(?) come with a little military surplus shovel to cover the calls of nature?
Looks like a step backwards to me...or perhaps, WV is on the cutting edge of this new tech...If I were investing, I would seriously look at cardboard and pallet manufacturing..

I thought we might kick some ideas around for a week...see what people wanted in their 'cabin in the woods, (as these are certainly not homes..dwellings of sorts perhaps...) and then build one here on the blog...
The ideal 'Green Home...Material List, Estimate of Time and Cost...done of course, West Virginia Style.

Do y'all find that a lot of people in WV go off grid? I mean, intentionally, not because they inherited a camper with no running water....And sometimes I see real estate listings that boast "free gas." Is that a common amenity on big parcels of land?
I like the idea of living small and simple- under 1500 square feet with solar/wind power using local materials, heat with woodstove/fireplaces, etc.

Free gas isn't necessarily tied to a large amount of land... It depends on three things: 1) Is there economicaly recoverable gas beneath your property? 2) Do you own the mineral rights, or were they sold by a previous owner? and 3) Does the driller want to structure the deal that way? (as opposed to a flat fee, a royalty per mcf, or some other formula).
Wood heat, by the way, is definitely not a "green" choice.

Uh Oh! and I was saving it Snorpus...that little box woodburner at Ace Hardware ($169.00)...for heating and cooking...
Are you saying that these Eco-huts have no heat?...
Back in the old Marine Corps days, we would rub two Hippies together to start a fire...can't do that now...they are all 'Smoked Out and buried.

We have a composting commode, and I gotta say; I'm quite happy with it. Looks just like a regular commode. Only requires cleaning about every 6 months, and it's sorta like peat moss when you empty it. No need for a septic sysytem, just a gray water drain. Beats having to go outside during inclement weather. Cost is about $700 for the entire set up, sober installation time is 1/2 a day.

Tell me more.
Is there a storage compartment below (or in the basement)? Any problems with building permits? Did you have a drain field for gray water, recycle it to the garden, or ?
A septic tank and drain field is one of the biggest PITAs about living in the country.
