Sistersville information
Can anyone give me information on this area? For example how close is the nearest hospital? Are there plenty of nursing jobs available nearby and any idea of payscale. What is the cost of living? How liberal are the people? We are a lesbian couple wanting to get out of the FL heat and rat race. How close is it to the Appalachian Trail? Any information is greatly appreciated!

I believe the nearest hospital would be the Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville, which is about 10 miles north of there. There would also be hospitals to the south in Parkersburg, which is a little larger town and likely has a bigger hospital. They need nurses everywhere.

The A.T. is about as far away from Sistersville as you can get, and still be in West Virginia. Actually, the A.T. is only in WV for about four miles, and that's at Harper's Ferry, in the Eastern Panhandle of the state. It roughly parallels the eastern WV-western VA border, but about 50-75 miles into Virginia, along the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. (Despite John Denver's lyrics, the Blue Ridge Mtns aren't in West Virginia.) From Sistersville, Google Maps says it's close to a 5 hour drive to Harper's Ferry.

Yup- 4 miles in the eastern panhandle but then farther south the trail runs about 20 miles on the VA/WVA border.
Maryland section is easy, WV in Harpers Ferry is the place to refuel and sightsee, then on to take a beating in Snickers Gap in VA..
I'm not sure about the medical opportunities in Sistersville, but you could go east to Morgan or Hampshire County WV and work in Winchester VA which has an outstanding medical facility and good prospects for those in the medical field. That would put you close to the A/T..

Sistersville does have a small hospital. But Parkersburg might be more what you are looking for if you don't want to be in the Eastern Panhandle.

I was in Florida last week near Tampa and would love to be back in the sun and warm weather. It's cold and cloudy here which seems to be the case most of the time in the Winter around here.Sistersville is pretty small with a couple of little stores and restaurants like Domino's and Dairy Queen. They do have a small hospital Sistersville General. Not a whole lot going on there otherwise.

Not everyone wants "a whole lot going on". I was in Tampa last week too; there's something just wrong about having to run your house A/C in the middle of winter. I'm glad to be back North.

I'm like that. If I want " a lot going on " I can drive to Morgantown, Pittsburgh..DC.....
I like the quiet country living. I think Sistersville is very nice for someone who wants to live the quite life. You are still within driving distance of whatever you want..

There are some really beautiful homes in sistersville. You might want to look at Marietta Ohio or Vienna WV if you are looking at the ohio valley to relocate to. Beautiful homes at really good prices.
