CSX has owned The Greenbrier for 100 years -- you would think after 100 years experience they would know how to make it profitable. Evidently not.
I truly hope the Justice group does well with it, however.....
the Marriott has a proven track record of success in the hotel industry. It needs experts to get things back on track.
The Greenbrier is charming, etc. but it is not what it was several years ago. Not just my opinion, have heard the same from others.
BTW: Throwing a vent in here - the bartenders at Slammin Sammies are about the most hateful bartenders I've ever seen anywhere - they have either been there way too long or really hate their job.

Must tell a story on Sammie...hung out at the bar for years...a fellow came up to him one time and shot the bull for a while.
Sam had the bartender put a bill for $45.00 on his tab. The guy was furious...Sam said to him, "You think you're talkin' to me for free?"
Lot's of story's that will never get told too.

Vec, the bio was for J Justice Junior. It was a link from the wsaz web page. You should be able to get it from there. Don't know why my link won't work.

Hey David Kennedy
I get the impression you don't think Justice buying the Greenbrier is a good idea. Why is that?

It's a West Virginia generality...If there is money floating around (and a few hundred million will be spent on the government restoration) somebody in the 'Clan will get their hands on it...just that simple.
Marriott is an outsider and they have a reputation for honesty in the game. Don't fit in. It really surprised me that they made a play for the 'brier at all.
Bottomline...the Greenbrier is about the gambling industry. It's controled tightly in Wv...evidently Marriott spoke with CSX and never contacted the Wv cronies..and I would have too.
Wv has its reputation in the business world...that has been earned and it is a true negative reputation.

I think the Marriott deal was about Sam Huff.

That cleared up a lot of the confusion for me! Makes perfect sense now.

I wanted to share my little piece of Greenbrier history with you all.
I collect and buy/sell old Restaurant Ware as a hobby.
This is my favorite piece. This piece is circa 1915-1940s. It's in mint condition. Probably stolen from the Greenbrier early on.
This china pattern was used at the Greenbrier before World War II. Then the property was sold to the US Army and became known as Ashford General Hospital. After WW2. C & O repurchased the property and hired the renowned interior designer Dorothy Draper to completely redecorate The Greenbrier. A different china pattern was designed by Draper for use at the hotel when it reopened.
