Why don't you look at Beckley? Beckley is the biggest city south of Charleston. After you leave Charleston and go down 64/77 there won't be a bigger city anywhere in Southern WV. or in VA until you get way down in VA.

I'm about 40 minutes from Bluefield. That's far enough away, but close enough if something happens. Last census says there's close to 18,000 people here...but the area is much larger. The Shady Spring (suburb about 10 minutes out) has grown a lot, and it's the desireable area.

There's 2 hospitals in the city.
Your shopping needs:
There's the Crossroads Mall, 2 Walmart Supercenters, 4 Krogers, Big Lots, K-Mart, Kohl's, Lowe's, they're actually building a second Lowe's, they are getting ready to develop yet another new plaza that's suppose to contain Home Depot. There's 5 or 6 Rite Aid's in the area, and about 4 or 5 CVS Pharmacy's, plenty of banks. I would say at least 20 within the area and surrounding areas.

Beckley is definitely a growing city with the interstate close by for quick access to any city. Like I said Beckley is about 25 minutes from Princeton, 40 from Bluefield, about 50 minutes from Charleston, 1 1/2 hrs from Huntington, and about an hour from Lewisburg. It's basically in the center.

The Democrats have run WV into the ground. They keep their power by keeping the citizens dependent on govt programs. Businesses and those seeking to get out of this cycle are taxed out of existence. If you want to be near Bluefield, then you should be looking at Greenbrier County.

I moved from the big city of Pgh to Weirton Wva and let me tell you this, much better than rushing all the time. Living in the city is great for people who have a career or high paying jobs, but people like me who do not have college or anything like that, Wva is wonderful. I would raise my children in Wva than Pgh with crimes, murder and all. You will have that everywhere but in Wva very little crimes.

When we lived in pgh we were paying 650 dollars for an apt 2nd and 3rd floor 3 bedrooms. Now we are renting a 3 bedroom house, no walls to share, for 585 a month and that includes the 10 dollars for our dog. The neighbors are not bugging you, having to know your business or anything like that. Very relaxing place to live. No one could ever ask me to move back to pgh ever, I love pgh and grew up there all my life of 29 yrs, but I am tired of rushing and all.

Wva is a nice place to be.

I've been reading a lot of postings on this cite. Could you tell me more about where you are at. What part of the state? What cities are you closed to?

My husband and I are in NH and considering relocating. For a lot of reasons. We've considered Florida but??? We also have family in Bangor, ME. But winters are brutal and the economy is not so great.

I have just started looking at WV and it seems to be what we are actually looking for.?? maybe.

Could you also tell me what is available for the kids. Clubs, YMCA, after school activities, anything like that?

Shinnston, WV is the perfect little (Pop 2500) town. Has everything and is located near the airports or interstates that will take you 'down east. We vacation near kbunk and it's only a long days drive.
Everything that involves the kids is found in Shinnston, from Soccer, Little League, Pop Warner football, Swim Clubs, Pee-Wee wrestling and Scouting. One of the largest and best of the Boy Scout camps is located in the Monongalia National Forest...20 miles away.
Rivers and lakes abound, skiing at Caanan Valley, camping in pristeen wilderness areas.
And a friendly people who wave back and will let your car out into traffic. Work...work is everywhere!
Type in Shinnston, West Virginia in the Google Bar...you won't be disapointed.

I live in Weirton, just minutes to Steubenville Ohio, and Minutes to Pa. You will be about 45 minutes to Pgh from Weirton. There is alot of things near Weirton. There is Robinson Mall which is about 20 mins from Weirton, all kinds of national parks and forest, you would be about 45 mins to Tappan Lake Ohio for boat rentals, cabin rentals, fishing, and camping, there is a few YMCA in Pa not far from Weirton, one is in Robinson, I think there is one in Oakdale. You can search on the YMCA site and see the locations. The winters are not brutal like NH is at all, it is mild most of the time, but you will have days of ice, snow where you are stuck a bit, but when we first moved in October, the winter was not that bad, we had 2 bad ice storms and very little snow.

There is not alot of stores in Weirton, but there is Krogers, Kmart, Walmart, they are building a super walmart sometime next year I think and the old walmart now will be Sams club, quite a few fast foods, restaurants. Now Robinson has lots of stores, restaurants, and all.

The Weirton Medical hospital is wonderful, I went there twice for er, they were quick, clean and nice.

Anything else you would like to know.

I moved last year from Princeton WV to the quad cities in Illinois. I miss WV terribly!

WV is economically depressed... but if you and your husband can find jobs, then I think you should do what you want. It is certainly less expensive to live there than in Chi.

Have you considered Beckely? It's not that far from Bluefield... but you probably can find work in Bluefield as quick as you can Beckely.

Good luck to you!

I know you posted this quite some time ago, however I noticed nobody really answered your questions about the Bluefield-Princeton area.
I live in Princeton and love it, but realistically, there are not alot of jobs. On the upside, the people are really friendly, there is low crime and plenty of places to shop & eat near by. Athens is also a good choice. I'm not big on Bluefield, seems like lately all you hear about on the news are shootings and drugs.
Hope this helps!!

Princeton has it's fair share of drugs and violence and police corruption. Either way, Bluefield and Princeton are far from the violence of Chicago.

And, if you want to move into the area, Bluefield Virginia is the best community. Lower taxes and crime rate, both Bluefield and Princeton have similar problems - prostitution and drugs in the downtown.

All three major high schools in the area - Bluefield, Graham, and Princeton have good academic reputations with Graham(Bluefield Virginia) having the best.

Bluefield has two colleges in it - First Community banking headquarters, CNX Gas headquarters, Communication centers - Bluefield Daily Telegraph, WVVA TV news, Adventure Radio group headquarters, Norfolk Southern, American Electric power and Frontier regional headquarters. So, professional employment can be found - although difficult at times. Bluefield Virginia has a well-developed industrial park - with engineering firms, equipment manufacturers and bottling plants.

Bluefield puts you in the middle of a two-county community - Mercer/Tazewell. You're not more than 5 miles from major shopping centers and the choices will be growing soon with the Leatherwood development.
