I was born in WV, attended public school and college there as well. I escaped WV almost 12 years ago. Thanks to my job I've got to travel the US, Canada and the UK. I've seen many beautiful places, and so many offer much much more to offer than wild and wonderful West Virginia.
I'm going to make a generalized observation, and hope that others notice as well, hoping not to insult nor anger others. The people who have found West Virginia to be the best thing since sliced bread always mention "I've lived here or moved here 2x or 3x years and it's wonderful." People need to take this as a hint from such statements. Sure if you've lived here or there for 20 or 30 years and are content your going to list all the great things it has to offer. Avoiding the reality of poverty, lack of employment, especially if you have an advanced degree, very low salaries associated, substandard public education, the rampant explosion of drug related activities even in the rural areas, the generations of intense political corruption, the lack of public representatives to attract out of state business, and commerce to forward employment opportunities, the lack of public conveyance. The racism, homophobia, or general intolerance of those that are different associated with the rural sociological structure. It is naive to believe that this state or any state that is a utopia of kindness, goodness, and a safe haven for your children based on peoples opinion whom have not really lived anywhere else for years on end other than spending 2 weeks in Myrtle Beach, SC in the summer, or because the view from their back porch is spectacular. I mean in no way to offend anyone, my apologies if I have. I've lived there, I've seen the wonders of this place, they're not as impressive as I once myself might have thought. There's allot of negativity in this post and the sad thing is I could continue posting the cons because I don't remember the pros, or the cons out weighed the pro's and I have chose to forget them. Whatever your decision I pray you make the correct one, and are satisfied. |

Dear T.O.,
Welcome to the West Virginia Forum at city-data.com. I'm not completely clear on the point(s) you wanted to make, but the more voices, the better. Mosts of the posts on here are about specific locales. Yes, some of us, myself included, think that all things considered, we'd prefer to stay in (or move to) West, by God, Virginia. I don't think we ignore poverty, or job opportunities, or drugs, or any other negatives, but "we" (sorry to be presumptive) compare those factors to what we see (perceive) in other locations. No state is perfect, or even close to it. Even within a single state, there are significant differences from one region to another. West Virginia has had the reputation of being "hickville" for as long as I can remember, and I enjoy pointing out, for those who inquire, just how varied an experience living in West Virginia can be. As just one example, my SO has lived in Tampa for over 40 years, and she can literally feel the difference (positively) when she comes to WVa. Regards, Snorpus |

Bless your heart. I cant imagine rasing my two kids in a place where they wernt safe to run and play outside and catch lightning bugs on a summers night. I have 6yo and a 2yo, I feel your pain. I haven't lived anywhere but WVA, and really I wouldnt want too. Its a great place for a family. I know it dosent have the best jobs so thats why I decided when I got a degree to get a neutral degree that I know would last and I could take anywhere, thats why Im a nurse, theres always a hospital closeby and theres always sick people. If I had a business major I dont know if it would be so easy. Good for you..... move back! We'd love to have ya! |

[quote=jmag;548795]Well we are not exactly sure yet. We've been to the Morgantown area before and are going back soon to stay around the Elkins area. We're trying to stay within the area that will allow us to travel back to NJ in no longer then a six hour drive. I believe it took us five hours from Jersey to Morgantown and figure that Elkins shouldn't be any more then an hour from that. Please someone correct me if i'm wrong.
No, ur right!!!! Elkins is a wonderful little town. you wont be sorry. Hope ya'll get to move here. we'd love to have ya |

The little town of Moundsville is perfect for many things. The school system is very good, the cost of living is very reasonable, people are very friendly and helpful, but they do not bother you, just there when you need them. You are centrally located to many bigger cities without the hassle of having to live in them, crime is absolutely at a minimal, there are many places to shop, a new Wal-mart super store just opened there, Cabela's and many many other stores are either opened or will be opening very soon, the roads for the most part are good, weather is good: it seems that we are so located that most miserable weather very rarely hits us. My house is on the market therel, simply because I am now a widow and my children are grown so the house has more room than I need, but I still want to stay in the town. It is a very laid-back, friendly town and safe for our children. You don't have to worry about things that you do in a bigger town or one that is in another area. We are right across the river from Ohio and about 12-15 miles from the Pa. border and Interstate highway. Hope this has helped you and that you do come to WV and enjoy it!!!

Are you certain you were born in WV? I have lived in WV my entire life. I am a mother and a grandmother, have traveled the entire United States, been in every state except 2 and have never seen or been in a more beautiful, friendly state. West Virginian's are considered "clanish" by some outsider, I consider us family oriented. We raise our own children instead of sticking them in "pre school" or daycare family and extended family care for them while parents work or need a break. We look out for the neighbor kids as well as our own and know our neighbors well enought that we can call or walk over and let them know if their child is into something they should not be or something that will cause them to be hurt. "There is a saying it takes a village to raise a child" This is so true. Our crime rate is one of the lowest, there are churches on every corner, our children respect their elders and are taught morals and respect along with being given and shown love all their lives. We dont stick our parents in nursing homes or worse, we care for them as they cared for us when we were unable. I have worked my entire life as has my husband but have turned down jobs that may have put more money in my pocket but would have took more time away from my family and they outway the money by long and far! It depends on where your values are if you will be happy in WV. Personally I would rather know and trust my neighbors, be close to my family, and enjoy my days relaxing on a river bank, camping, skiing, hiking, fishing,or just enjoying family.

Not to follow everyone else, but my husband and I are also lookingat moving to WV. I am originaly from Pa and currently live in Mo. (big mistake) I am hearing alot of great places from ya all in WV, but how about around Delray or up towards Berkley Springs area? I like the idea of that area because you have many options with Pa, Md, Va being right there.

I am in WV, have two homes here. I don't like it. But the reason I don't like it is no fault of the state. I left FL to return to a real winter with snow. Well, we get snow that sticks maybe a dozen times during the winter and within three days, it's gone. Wasn't what I had hoped for.
