LOL Alice, sounds like you need to be north of elkins at the higher elevations. Pretty there, but it was too cold there for me, so I concentrated on the southern part of WV. Should you decide to relocate, try using the vegitation maps the growers use for colder climes. WV has multiple growing zones, the coldest being in the northeastern corner of the state.

I can suggest Hampshire County (Slanesville, Augusta, Romney areas)...very pretty, and a great place for kids (not that great for teens) there just isn't much for them to do here. Housing is decent and the drive to surrounding areas could offer jobs and shopping. Never seen any drugs...but have seen minor drug charges in the WEEKLY paper.
We lived in Winchester and moved here for the exact reasons that you stated (drugs being sold right in front of my house, neighborhood kids getting involved in shootings and violence etc) since moving to Hampshire I have seen my now 17 yr old son slow down and go from barely passing in Va to being on the Honor roll the entire 3 years that we have been here. Best wishes to you! If I can further help please let me know.

neatsark07 ~ You said it all! I don't know why ANYBODY would consider moving to this oppressed state! There is no future here unless you enjoy scraping by and then not always being able to make it. And, let's be honest, there is nothing to do here...especially in the Parkersburg area where I am (unless you want to hike through the woods all the time). I am hoping to be in Florida within the next year to year and a half also...

citygrl707 ~ I would strongly advise against moving here. There are 48 other states to look at that have better economies, a more educated population and an overall better quality of life! Moderator cut: link to a competitors site removed

I also pay $850 a month for a small apartment and that is the cheapest one here. My friend who lives across the road in another apartment complex pays $1025 a month and that includes nothing. The cheapest houses you will find down here to buy are well over $189,000 and most running in the $220,000 to $330,000. That is for a small city lot. And the crime here is outrageous. Not just here in this town but everywhere in florida, and talk about sex offenders there are a ton of them here. I am so relieved to know that I will definately be moving to West Virginia this summer. I am sure WV has it's share of crime also but if you look at it nationwide I believe it ranks lower on the list. Just can't wait to be in the country again. Country girl at heart.

Amen! I'm still attempting to leave this horrible state. I'm looking at WV, KY, et al. I read a post from someone wanting to relocate to FL. If you want high prices, low wages, hurricanes and hot humid misery, you'll love it. Personally, I think this entire state sucks!

I was just reading the posts above re: WV. We did get retired here about 2 months ago. We decided on Parkersburg. It is not too big and not too small. Re: crime. I'm sure there is some crime here but I have not seen one window with bars on it. That tells me something after living within 50 miles of Houston and still people feel the need for burgular bars. Re: the people. I can honestly say that everyone I've met, so far, has been extremely friendly and nice to me. At least I know my neighbors here and I've only lived in this house for 1 month! That's more than I can say for the 26 years living in the small town of Shepherd, Tx. There is always something to do if you choose to. We love it here.

Welcome to West Virginia, JJ. I'm glad to hear your experience so far has been positive.

Have you been to Blennerhassett Island yet? Fenton Glass?

Welcome and glad you like it here.
Curious - how did you go from Texas to WV? How did you even think of WV?

Im not very picky just grocery's and maybe like a walmart. I dont want to be to far from bluefield because my parents are there. Also rent for housing has to be reasonable. And me and my husband need a job . Thank you

I did like princton when i was there not sure about the job market .
yea princeton would be good you can shop as well as work you can be in beckley in 45 minutes and thats where a lot of work is ,i live in mcdowell county if you want to work don't let any one tell you there are any jobs here .i have raised my kids here they are 12& 14 but they are druggies here so but they are no killings and stuff like that.i hope you figure out what you want to do i would suggest if you can afford it to come here in princeton and stay with family and see what kind of job you are looking for and look around for a few days do that before you completly move i have done that before ,just pack up and move and i have regreted it because i would have to do everything with my 2 children
it is expensive to move so go see what princeton or beckley or surrounding areas have to offer you before you commit you have parents in bluefield so thats good my husband is from chicago and its been hard for him to get use to it here where i live ya know so im sorry for making this so long
